To the people who are fat and can't lose weight and are already eating OP's "healthy breakfast" you should know and so should she that oatmeal and banana likely has JUST as many carbs and sugar as a pastry. Oatmeal is high carb and bananas are one of the if not the highest fruits in carbs and sugar. Yes you get fiber and the oatmeal is a complex carb but those are really minimal differences. A banana and oatmeal is sadly going to be nearly the same in sugar and carbs as a muffin. No joke.

Wait, even steel cut oatmeal is bad for you? I make my kids McCann's Irish steel cut oatmeal at least 3-4 days a week. No sugar added, just fresh fruit and organic milk. That's not good?

DP. I would stop looking at things as bad and good. Figure out the calories in one serving of that oatmeal (measured). Most likely it's the same as regular oatmeal, but you don't know until you look at the label and measure. Also, does it keep you full? For example, one serving of regular oatmeal and one serving of oat bran has the same amount of calories, but oat bran keeps you full longer. I switch back and forth because I like variety.

Track your calories for a week to get an idea of how many calories you're eating. Are you gaining weight? Then you're eating too much.

That's not what I said. No it's not inherently "bad" for you. But if you, like the PP, think you'll be virtuous and lose weight by switching from a pastry to a howl of oatmeal with banana, you won't, because calorically they are both going to be high carb and relatively high in sugar. The difference is they're complex carbs and unrefined sugar but to your body, that's a minimal difference. It just means you're getting more fiber and vitamins with your carbs and sugar. No food is "bad" but in terms of impact on weight, these two foods are going to be pretty similar.

Everyone's said it above, even OP, but it really is the answer.

Cut carbs (I keep to around 50-75g net a day). A sandwich maybe once a week, or a breakfast biscuit, or something, but not daily. Sweets once in a while, like once a month for a special occasion.

Eat more protein. Eat more fat.

Skip breakfast and eat two larger meals rather than three small ones.

Limit fruit to berries. No juice. Ever!

I'm now down 70 lbs from my highest weight. It's taken a decade, and the first 35 was lost just with straight calorie counting, but I went low-carb late last year and have now lost 35 lbs, down to a weight I have basically never maintained as an adult. And feel fabulous.

If *I* can cut carbs, anyone can. I lived on them. But it is true that after a few days of white-knuckling, the cravings are gone. Besides, bacon or cheese can do a good job of substituting!

Ice cream

Cutting out fried food, chips, ice cream and white starches helped me lose 10 lbs. I also cut back on meat, ate it once a week.

I only eat out once every 2 weeks. And i make sure I take home half of what is on my plate. Fill up at the salad bar instead! Warm crusty bread at the resto is the only bread I eat. Totally worth it to wait!

Diet soda makes you fat. It’s one of modern life’s great ironies.

Just stop. Nobody is fat because of bananas.

And yet, it IS an example of a breakfast that would stall my own weight loss. Everyone is different, but for my body if I ate oatmeal and bananas on the regular I would not be able to lose weight as effectively. There are better options.

What would your better option be?

One of the biggest issues in our society is labeling foods "good" and "bad". That shouldn't be the mindset. There are nutritionally dense foods, and not nutritionally dense foods. There are high caloric foods and low caloric foods. There are foods high on the glycemic index and low on the glycemic index. Depending on YOUR body, some of these factors will impact your body differently. For example, if you have any sort of issue with insulin, foods high on the glycemic index may cause inflammation, increased hunger, etc that will lead to different behaviors that will impact your weight loss/gain.
