You don't have to share those beliefs (although your priest, bishop, archbishop and the Pope might disagree). You can be as much of a cafeteria Catholic as you want. But, when you say, "I'm Catholic," people assume that you hold the beliefs professed by the Catholic Church. If you said, "I'm sorta Catholic," or "I'm a C&E Catholic," or even, "I'm a lapsed Catholic," then people are less likely to make assumptions about your beliefs. But if you just stand up and say, "I'm Catholic," then you get the baggage that comes along with claiming allegiance.

It's not just true of Catholics. It's true of every group that expresses dogma - Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, Baptists, Mormons, etc.

People like PP that send their kids to catholic schools for the daily teachings of their cult are not lapsed Catholics.

The definition of liberalism is intolerance for discrimination and bigotry. You can soft pedal your "different views" but when they involve denying other people civil rights, they are intolerable.

When my now fourth grader was in pre k, he came home and said that a girl in his class has two dads. It is common practice at this school for kids to bring in their family photos to keep in their cubbies. Each student had a chance to discuss their photo and she said hers was of her and her to dads.

My husband and I used this as an opportunity to discuss all kinds of family structures and let him know that what's important is you have someone who loves and cares for you and believes in you no matter what. Fast forward a few years..he knows at least 4-5 other kids with same gender parents.

Simple, clear, and honest explanations are best at this age.

There are many things I have always disagreed with what the church said, and I told my teachers.B ut overall I took away lessons of compassion and tolerance, neither of which you are showing.
