Michael Strahan leaving Live to go full time on GMA

No, because they taped the show on Friday. Today was still part of her scheduled vacation.

TOMORROW is the big day!!!

I'm surprised he would want to move to GMA. Live was his (and Kelly's) show. On GMA, Robin and George are the top dogs, the rest are a revolving door of supporting cast members. Plus he doesn't seem suited for hardcore serious news and Lara already dominates the segments on fluff news. Not sure if this is a good long term career move for him.

He is a jackass.

I can understand maybe being hurt not being told first before the news broke in the press, but it's work, not a sorority or high school. Kelly pouting and not showing for work gives women in the work place a bad name IMO, that we are too emotional, etc. If I were her, I would show my professionalism and show up for work, maybe use this as an opportunity to negotiate for more salary, or perks or a say in the next co host. But she's not the boss, so she needs to calm down.

I have barely followed this story, but did see an interview with someone from People the other day.

Kelly is very upset for a number of reasons. She has been a LONG-time employee of ABC (she was on All My Children) from 1990-2002. She started with Live! in 2000/2001 and also did Hope & Faith from 2003-2006. Even though she was a 25+ year employee of ABC, they did not elect to inform her of potential changes to "Kelly & Michael" until AFTER they were decided. Furthermore, she wasn't told until the press release was going public. So she was learning the same time as the rest of the world. She feels like ABC did not show her any respect by giving her advance notice of the announcement.

Kelly was evidently asked to go full-time on GMA a few years ago, but turned it down due to (1) having to wake up at 4:30 AM 5 days a week, (2) the long hours of the show itself (vs. only 1 hour for Live!, except 2 hours on Thursday as they film the Friday episode on Thursday), and (3) Live! is pretty easy work. The People person did not think she was jealous of Michael because Kelly also likes to go out and have a nighttime social life, which would be pretty hard with a 4:30 AM wake-up call daily.

Kelly's salary for about 5 hours of work per week is $15 million a year. Again, the People person said it wasn't a jealousy of salary issue.

Kelly had a planned family vacation to celebrate her 20th anniversary for Thursday (4/21) - Monday (4/25). She was also pissed that ABC dropped this bombshell on her 2 days before she was supposed to leave. After the announcement was made, she told them she wasn't working on Wednesday. I learned she cancelled the trip altogether. Really sad. Evidently, it was very well-known that they were going to Turks & Caicos for the anniversary trip.

It was a confidential business decision that was not about her. Staffing changes happen all the time and other employees are not privy to the information until the change happens. She threw an epic tantrum and instead should have gone home and cried on her 15M. ABC should cancel Live and do the third hour of GMA.

Don't you think that's what they are laying the foundation for? A third hour of GMA with Strahan and Lara.

Interesting idea - though GMA only airs real news for the first 15 minutes and the remaining 1:45 is filler. What will they talk about for an extra hour? Are the ratings bad on Live?

I do. That's why I was saying they should cancel Live. If Kelly only has one year left in her contract, they are probably just biding their time. The network obviously views Michael as the hot commodity so they've taken care of him.

Live was renewed through 2020 so it's not leaving the air anytime soon. If Kelly really only has 1 year left on her contract I can see her jumping ship for her own talk show after this drama.

Go Kelly. Her speech was heartfelt and real. She said it was about communication, consideration and respect in the workplace. To her Disney/ABC has been her family for 26 years. I totally get why she was pissed. Go Kelly.

Live is a big major money maker for ABC. Kelly's $15 million salary is pennies to what it earns. It is in syndication in some markets and even airs on non-ABC channels.

But ABC could have told her prior to releasing the press release.

Isn't Live kinda like her own talk show? I mean if she left woul the show survive?

Yes the show would survive without Kelly, but she is a huge part of its continued success. I still don't agree with her about being owed a day to process (have a fit), I'm happy she addressed the situation head on this morning rather than carrying on like nothing happened.

I do agree her speech seemed heartfelt and real. I am surprised how've given that she is in the entertainment industry how personally she has taken this and how shocked she was. I've been with my organization for 9 years, I've worked hard and they've treated me well. However I understand it is a business and they will not hesitate to drop me one day if it's necessary to help their bottom line. I will likewise make sure to look out for my own best interests. The kind of loyalty she seemed to expect just doesn't happen in corporate America anymore. I hope she has her eyes open now.
