Actually, NOT this. People who commute from MD for DC jobs who are stealing pre-K spots from DC residents overwhelming are NOT low income but are relatively affluent by every definition and just want to use DC's full day preK to save cash for conveniences like summer vacations. BTW, summer school is also free and available to all DCPS students -- so that's also free summer camp for those who commit residency fraud . AS for cost, DCPS has the biggest funding of any school system in the nation. DCPS can afford to police itself. |
Not to mention that DCPS is now crying that the cupboard is bare and cutting funding for the Fillmore arts center, the Murch renovation, etc. I hate to sound like a GOP candidate, but when it comes to DC, there is money to be saved/repurposed by cutting out blatant waste, fraud and abuse. |
At a minimum, a DCPS or other DC government employee who is found to be committing fraud should be fired summarily. |
| I have Florida tags, and I am not changing them. I pull my car right into my parking space in the back of my DC house. I pick my kid up in my SUV in a DCUM HRCS. Suck it. |
Well, no one thinks that FL residents are regularly committing residency fraud to attend DC schools, now do they? |
Florida tags, hmm. So at a minimum you're violating DC law and committing insurance fraud. Perhaps you're also falsely using a Florida address to evade state income taxes. |
A perfect example of how some cross-governmental collaboration on the part of DC could uncover fraud at a bunch of different levels and bring more cash into the city. Unless, of course, you have a congressional exemption to keep your FL tags. |
I'm "relatively affluent", but I SAH and can't afford to send my kid to ANY private, even half day 2 days a week if we don't get in somewhere. So people committing fraud infuriate me. We made our choices (many of which centered around being able to stay in the city in our neighborhood) and understand we can't take free pre-K for granted, but when somebody with multiple properties who can currently afford to have their kid in full time daycare takes a slot we could've had? Yeah, I'm pissed. |
And I haven't had a vacation in 5 damn years. |
Maybe that's your problem. You hate to sound like someone taking responsibility for not spending more money than they have. Socialism only works until you run out of other people's money. |
You do sound like someone from Florida. Or the ghetto. But, I repeat myself. |
Watch your language and get a grip. There are always open spots - even for PS/PK. Always. Your problem is that free isn't good enough for you, you also want it to be walking or a 5 minute drive from your house. So, get a grip, check your privilege, and either drive to the closest free PK (because there will be more than one) or else get a crowbar and jimmy open your wallet, and pay for what you want within a walking warm latte distance from your home. Grow up. |
Sorry to say but you're wrong on that front: one private school tuition is $38,000 a year (Sidwell, for example). If you have 2 kids in middle school, it's $76,000 per year. Plus there's the problem of getting the kids admitted to private school. Not always easy. All of this makes $18K/year for just 3 years sound pretty practical to some upper middle class DC residents who want a decent middle school. |
DCPS is not going to waste funds on something that yields such a low return. Nor should it. Its your right to be mad about it. Thats fine. But just know that the wait for DCPS to correct the issue will be a nice, long, slow burn. |
Yup. Arts programs and renovations > chasing extremely low volume of residency fraudsters. Burn baby burn.... |
