Dollars to donuts OP would not have left her purse in plain sight in Ward 7 or Ward 8. She left her purse on the seat in Georgetown thinking it wouldn't be an issue. That's the privilege and stupidity that people are talking about. |
Op -- you sound really naive. Criminals go where the money is -- so, yes, of course there will be crime in G'town. |
So you don't lock your doors? What is your address? |
Poverty. 90%+ of the poor in DC happen to be black. And it's the poor who commit crimes (that get caught). Same reason why in West Virginia most of the crime is committed by poor, low educated, and often addicted white folks. |
Also, the vicious cycle of crime. Kid grows up without a dad, lacks supervision, gets in with the wrong crowd, looking for a sense of belonging. Gets into small theft and selling drugs like his friends. Gets more daring. Commits bigger crimes, sells harder drugs. Gets caught. Gets slammed with a felony conviction at age 18. Serves some jail time. Gets hardened in prison. No rehabilitation offered. With a felony, can't find a job, can't get on welfare...goes back to crime. This issue really needs to be addressed by our society if we are ever going to break the cycle. |
Know what drastically cuts recidivism rates? -the original Project Exile, created by Tim Kaine when he was mayor of Richmond. But the key provision was: -incarcerate the offender AT LEAST 50 miles from their home. Suddenly, the offenders are not sharing a cell block with people they know from their own neighborhood. Suddenly, they don't get weekly visits from their mommas or their babies mommas. Suddenly prison seems a lot more like punishment. THEN they realize that they no longer want to victimize innocent people once they are released- because they don't want to go back to prison. |
Metro Transit police are trying to find the group of teenagers police say assaulted another teen and a Maryland couple aboard a train, taking electronics and the teen’s shoes.
One of the victims was a 43-year-old man who was left with injuries to his back and ribs, and the mark of a footprint on his face. The man, who suffered a stroke more than a decade ago, has disabilities. Gay slurs were used http://wtop.com/local/2015/12/metro-searching-for-teens-who-beat-robbed-3-green-line-riders/ |
I'm the PP and I agree with you. Of course prison should not be fun but by the same token, these people need WORK after they get out or they'll just go back to a life of crime. Too much unnecessary discrimination against felons. No, I am not one, in case you are wondering. |
Or worse. Recall when Marion Barry was incarcerated and he was "serviced" by one of his fervent supporters during prison visiting hours?! |
Then we need more police to go where the criminals are going. |
And who exactly had the "power" back then? I recall when Carol Schwartz was the only Republican and the only white elected official in the District building. The reason why not much was done back in the day was the sheer incompetence of the Dysfunctional City government. |
My cousin's purse was stolen out of her car while she and her family were at church. In rural Kansas. Probably by some white meth-head. Crime is everywhere. |
