They most likely tried the car doors first to see if opened. If you are going to leave items in plain sight in your car, you might as well leave it unlocked, at least you won't get your windows smashed.

I have a friend that lives in AM and his windows has been smashed twice to get items that he left on the seats. Hide your items people, or take them with you. Not really that hard. Geez

Nothing new. This happens in Cleveland Park, Georgetown, parking garages during the Holiday season. Have t you learned to not leave valuables in plain sight-purses, iPhones, etc in your car? I never leave mine in the car. My gym parking lot had this happening too.

Also no purse in your dressing room if you leave to go to the big mirror outside of them--another target.
