In the 80s, Princeton was a very weird place for African Americans. The whole diversification exercise always felt a bit forced. I am sure that it is much better now. |
She attended DCPS elementary, BFD. A lot of people send their kids to public elementary. However by fifth and sixth grade, the affluent kids are majority enrolled in private. Key and Mann elementary are perfect examples |

Amy went to Hardy middle school. Public school. |
That's because they all bail out of DCPS before they are stuck with Hardy middle school, which doesn't have a great reputation. There is a higher public school retention rate in those upper NW neighborhoods that are zoned for Deal. |
The key word in PP's first sent sentence is "almost". One of my (much younger) stepsisters was admitted to Harvard & Stanford but chose Columbia. The other got into Stanford & Yale but chose -- gasp! -- NYU. They were both smart enough to choose the best fit instead of just going with the most "prestigious" school. That said, I'm guessing Malia will end up at either Stanford or Harvard. I wouldn't be surprised, however, if she goes to Columbia instead. |
Her brother went there around the same time and seemed to have a very positive experience. Like anything, it depends on the individual. |
he was a star baller on campus. not comparable to MO. |
| Malia's cousin is a soph at princeton |
Yes, thanks, I grew up here. I just find this overt snobbery totally insufferable. |
| The simple answer: wherever she wants to. |
Would oxbridge let her skate in if she was not academically strong enough, on paper and in her tutorial interviews? Not sure. |
Sure. They are even more gaga (pardon the expression) over fame than the U.S. At least we don't give our celebrities knighthoods. |
Let's be clear. It may have been awkward, but it was not forced. It was a voluntary initiative to admit minority students like MO who objectively were usually less qualified than other students in order to enhance their future opportunities and the opportunities of their children. And, by and large, that is exactly what it has achieved. |
I can't remember the last time a child/teen in the White House was a boy. GHWB 41 had twin girls, Clinton had a girl, GWB's kids were grown before he got to the White House, Reagan's kids from both marriages were grown, Carter had a girl, Ford had a daughter at Holton Arms but I'm not sure it overlapped with his presidency. Considering that the service academies are more than 80 percent male, I think this makes a lot of sense. |
