where is Lee moving? Leak it here!

Lee Administration has said that they cannot announce the new location they have been promised until the charter school currently occupying the building has made the annoucent that they are moving.

Doesn't sound as if that situation fits Tree of Life....

Imagine Hope has a lease that doesn't expire until 2020, though I heard a rumor that they have been promised a former DCPS building...

The building Doar is currently in is listed as "for lease" on the building's website...

Lee Admin has also said they are looking at a back up space in case the "promised" space falls through, and, as far as I know, have given NO details about that space (no Ward given, no direction, not even an estimated distance...)

Imagine can't be promised a DCPS, they have to go through the bidding process and it would have already happened for 2016.

Anyone have any idea where the 'back up' space is?

This sounds like no progress. Sounds like the exact same line they have been giving since this time last year.

Tree of Life is in a horrible, horrible location. I really pray that Lee does not end up in that spot, and I don't have a child at Lee nor do I plan to have a child at Lee. But that building should never be the location of a school. I used to feel so bad for the Tree of Life kids. Seriously, the building is literally plopped right in the middle of a scrap metal yard. There are several taxi centers and mechanic shops there with cars idling all day. It is an industrial wasteland.

I read the Tree of Life charter and thought it sounded like such a nice idea for a school. I think the lower grades were actually doing okay as well?

I always wonder what happens when a community like that is dissolved. It's one of the things I really, really dislike about the charter system. If you're going to invest in something for children, don't scrap it and them.

(Sorry, I just had to get that out somewhere.)

ditto. Except I'm a Lee parent with no plans on leaving Lee. I'd grudgingly drive across town for Lee. I wouldn't send my kids to school for 7 hours right next to an open air, 4-story, one-block trash heap. Way too unhealthy. I wonder if location choice doomed tree of life?

Don't zoning laws or something prohibit schools from being located in certain areas? I can't believe that there aren't any regulations for this because there has to be health implications from kids playing outside with certain air quality standards.

You'd think? But SSMA, Sela, Imagine Hope and Ideal Charter are all located surrounded by warehouses and a bus depot. And when I look at DOAR on streetview, it looks even worse than Tree of Life. So... perhaps not? Is there someone I could call at the DoE to ask about this? Because I've been wondering how some of these charter contracts happened for these buildings in the first place.

This isn't true. The email last month said that both locations that they are considering are within a 10 min drive of the current location "in traffic according to Google maps", that both have green space and are relatively close to public transportation.

I wonder if Lee (or any other charter) has thought about the old Crummell School building. I love old DC school buildings, and this is one I've thought about.
(Also, the one downtown at 10th and H, but I think with it abutting the Secret Service, there's no chance the GSA will ever release the building).

Public and public charter schools can locate pretty much anywhere. There were some modest minimum lot size requirements put in several years ago after Cap Hill neighbors raised a stink about Appletree. The laws were written at a time before charter schools, when it was assumed the government would be providing a big chunk of land for a school and making sure it was appropriate Etc.

Crummel is an absolute political non starter. There will be a lot of opposition.

I'd like to start (or maybe back up and go down the lust again) with the 'promised school' and the charter that is vacating that have been mentioned by the Administration as the selection . So what and where is that ? Is it Ward 5? Ward 7? Ward 1? Ward 1?

What charter(s) are moving and in negotiations with Lee? Frustrating.

things may have changed since last year when they vaguely discussed the possibility of taking over a current's school's current building in ward 5. Now all the talk is what has been posted - ward 5, 10 minute of less drive from current location in traffic, greenspace, end of September announcement
