Why do you call it "spanking" when it is "hitting"?

Oh yes I know you wouldn't want to be my friend anyway blah blah...then own it. Be open and honest about your "parenting" ways. So middle ages...

it's easier that you start with your tiresome tirade every time you meet anyone (to your credit, you are probably already doing this) so that spankers and non-spankers alike can avoid you. jeez.

Hitting someone means forcefully bringing your hand towards any part of their body against the other persons will. That's what spanking is people. Wake up. Own it. You ARE hitting your children and if you can't even own that maybe you should re-think if spanking/hitting your child really is so very okay with you...since you can't even call it what it is.

I'll hit anyone's kid who pisses me off. I own it.

Oh. Nice justification there! That's what I expected.

Just own it. You hit your kids. Own it.

OP, the answer is that it is amore precise word for most acts of spanking. Hitting encompasses both intentional and unintentional acts, and does not describe intent:
I hit the mailbox backing out of the drive way.
I hit my son's elbow when I was trying to give a high five.
When I thought he was trying to steal my purse, I hit him in the head with my keys.
I was so angry at his comment that I hit him in the chest.

Spanking is intentionally striking with the intent to punish and or change behavior.

For the record, I do not spank my kids. But arguing semantics is silly.

Also:

"what a great workout, let's hit the showers."

"She's pretty hot, I would hit that."

"I have 15, Dealer's showing a 10. Hit me."

You should not hit a 15 when the dealer is showing a 10. Just fold.

Would you really hit a 15 against a 10? I think I would just hold and hope dealer busts.

OP, how about you "own" the fact that you cannot understand the difference?

I hope you don't go on these tirades with your kids when they do something you disagree with.

NP here, haven't read the whole thread.

Regardless of what you call it, I don't think anyone can dispute that it is purposefully causing pain as a means of behavior modification.

That's scary to me, and not something I'm comfortable with or consider moral as a means of child discipline.

Of course. 10 is not a bust card for the dealer. Stay only if the dealer is showing 6 or less. Otherwise, when the dealer has a 10, chances are his other card is 7 or greater, and then he stays and wins.

+1. I'll also hit the parent if she's pissed off that I had to step in, because that will make me even more angry.

Yes, you hit a 15 against a 10. Clearly the correct play.

I hit anyone who uses the term "own it" in a serious way. What does that even mean?

All punishments cause some sort of pain, whether it's physical or emotional (from isolation, banishment, restriction, denial of privileges/pleasure, criticism, disappointment, etc.) What makes physical pain, specifically, immoral?

Okay. I get it. I need to update my skills before I got to Maryland Live again.
