I think it is sad on the one hand that people are living a lie - that's it - they are living a lie (like these men who have two families in the same town!). It must be hard, but they should not break the law like this.

"But I'm certainly not going to report them". I mean my kid is covered. They're in. Too bad for the other DC resident kids that are effed waiting on waitlists. My kid is taken care of, so who cares about residency cheaters. Sorry to all the DC kids that have their chance stolen. Sucks to be you!

Would you report the family after hearing the conversation from the boy - a boy that you have known for some time? What if I reported the family and it turns out that his dad lives in DC? I have no idea if it is anonymous to report someone but I'm not going to report this incident. I would feel ridiculous to go the principal and say, "Oh, little Johnny over there just mentioend that he moved to Bowie. I think you should make sure that he is really a resident now." The teachers heard the conversation also. I think if he truly is not a resident then someone will turn them in.

You should feel ridiculous- goofball! That's not how reporting works. It's not rocket science- you call the OSSE and post anonymously. They take it from there. You cheaters are trying to make the process seem really hard to turn people off. It's not!!

Are you sure, goofball? (What is a goofball anyway? I mean, I know what it means - but, why did the add the "ball" to the "goof" between 1935 - 40? I apparently have too much time on my hand today....anyway....
According to the DC Public Charter school website, it takes more than that: http://www.dcpubliccharter.com/Parents-and-Community/Residency-Fraud-and-Verification-Guidelines.aspx

So, who's the goofball now?

Seriously, what do the parents say? "Oh, I didn't realize that if I moved out to MD that we would have to leave a DC school." That's just ridiculous.

I hope all you people who go on and on about how you shouldn't report, it's karma and all that ridiculous stuff that is obviously intended to dissuade people from reporting is just intensifying the desire to do so. I was on the fence about this but the lady doth protest too much which makes me really believe this is a much bigger problem than I ever thought and I'm 100% convinced that cheaters are actively trolling this thread (and any other related thread) because they are desperate to make people lose interest in the issue. Well, all your protestations aren't getting that accomplished, that's for sure.

No you're not a goodball- there's a whole nother word for your dumbass! How 'bout you know what you're talking about before posting. The process is very simple and anonymous. No, you can't say- Little Johnny said he lives in Bowie. Okay, peace out. They do want more specific info. but not much. Sorry, cheaters. Ya'll are all about to be outed and booted back to PG. Sorry that PG schools are about to get a lot more dishonest parents involved in their PTA.

I don't think that folks defending cheaters are themselves cheaters. But this thread has helped me think about my own values, and convinced me that I have a moral obligation to report anyone I suspect of cheating.

Soon this place will be like stalins russia, where everybody report on their neighbors.
Should we also report those that do not report?
Do we have real politruks? Could we report those who are republicans, gun owners, have had abortions, are bold and have skew teeth and stutter?

It is indeed unfortunate that the system as it stands forces families to report each other. Residency verification should be the job of OSSE.

However, I would do it if I had good evidence for address cheating, if for no other reason than to create a paper trail that someday a councilmember or the Washington Post might find worthy of inquiry.

Go the hell back to Russia, dude! As for the rest of us, reporting is not that big a deal. Simple process. Legit folks are off the hook very easily. Cheaters have to pony up, though. It's not like the seats are cheap- 10 grand a pop.

Dammit, the skew teeth and stutterers are ESPECIALLY repugnant and MUST be reported! Heck, they should be kept out of *every* public school system!

But seriously, don't be ridiculous PP. It is a far cry from Stalinist Russia to do your best to afford to stay in DC and do things the right way, and then be confronted with people who could care less about who they're cheating out of a spot and just drive in from outside, maybe even talk or brag about it.

And, actually, we're not reporting our neighbors... unless you live right on the border, by definition, we're reporting people who SHOULD be our neighbors but instead are neighbors of MoCo/PG folks, not us. So, actually, it's all ok, no neighbor-on-neighbor crime!

Report. People who are cheating or would cheat want you to believe it's the anti-social apocalypse, but the same people apparently don't give a crap about the DC kid who, because they couldn't get a OOB spot at a popular DCPS or into a charter and no matter how hard their parents work to improve their IB school it won't improve enough while they're there to save their education, all because some other kid from MD/VA got their spot. Somehow, to them, only the kids of cheaters matter.

Ok, they are not our neighbors.
Jesus said love your neighbor, and next he was asked to define who is "neighbor". I assume the concensus is that in order to love your neighbor you need to report the ones who are not neighbors.
This would not be an issue if we had a thing like free schooling for children or if the powers that be would actually be able to provide schooling and funds etc.
Maybe we could just make it against the law for certain people to have children?

Yeah, but Jesus was inbound for an excellent school. It was easy for Him to say that.

I really hoping you are exaggerating. If a second of congressional time is wasted on this false problem, I would be incredibly pissed off.

Are you incredibly pissed off about the time wasted by that Congressman from Utah, trying to ban gay marriage and abortion in the District of Columbia? If they can meddle in our affairs when they should back the hell off, perhaps we should get some good out of them, too.

Last time I checked, none of those things were illegal. Lying about your residency to access social services, however, IS illegal.

Do try to keep up, dear.

I love you, PP. That was the funniest funny I've read all day. Thank you.
