What is in the Virginia water causing violence and mayhem at campuses.

Well duh, but not every college has students who are admitted to start Spring semester.

Lots do. My friend's daughter went to a NC school, hated it and started Northeastern in the spring. Her brother started London school of Economics, hated it, and went to another college for spring semester in the states - will start Columbia this fall.
