You can do this at any college on earth except maybe Harvard.

Well duh, but not every college has students who are admitted to start Spring semester.

UMD....I like the sound of that. It's like medical doctor!

Sounds more like Mud to me.

Just last year there was a terrible hazing incident involving the Zeta Phi Beta sorority at the University of Maryland which rocked the campus.

Zeta Phi Beta sorority sisters took a pledge off campus and punched, choked and beat her with a wooden paddle. Seven UMD girls were charged in that case.

My kids won't be going there.

I guess it comes down to just two schools, really. Harvard and Maryland. There is apparently little daylight between them. Thanks UMD guy, for all this solid info. I used to think Maryland was just another big state school, but in a bad neighborhood. Now i know better. I can now cross Georgetown, Berkeley, and Stanford off my list and focus on the hard choice.

Md likes Georgetown since we gave the land for it and we are the original catholic colony! Those are all great schools with low levels of mass death / woundings, bludgeonings, abduction murder, beheadings, mass assault or viral suicide. Thumbs up!

As a UMd supporter I have a message for the umd serial poster: Stop. Seriously. Just stop.

^ very funny. Good on you sir or ma'am.
My take is that they are both big state unviverities (BSU's), but only one is ranked as the #2 public university on the country bu U.S. News and World Report.
Cant understand why the OP keeps bringing to everyone's attention how UMD pales in comparison.

Because Umd is ranked ahead of UVA in every world university rating other than us news. And even in u s news , Umd is ranked ahead of UVA in every major that requires brains. Also it ranks ahead in Nobel graduates and Pulitzer graduates as well as Nobel / Pulitzer faculty. Also double the number of national championship teams. Also cp has 6 x less violent crime than Charlottesville . Plus Umd is adjacent to the most powerful city in the world with in campus federal installations of the national archives, NASA , NOAA , the national weather forecast center, the international foreign language institute, homeland security admin, the national physics institute etc.... UVA is a great school but please.

As someone who grew up and has now moved back to a state with some of the top schools in the nation, this thread is cracking me up. I had no idea umd guy existed but he has seriously made my day. I'm not sure where your pride comes from. College park...decent school. Online university? What a freaking joke lom

Anonymous wrote:You left out Towson and Salisbury and St mary's why.... because theya re just as good as jmu/odu/etc... but barring details Md, has better schools

hopkins > Uva
USNA > W+L
UMD > V murder Tech
St Marys > Jmu
Salisbury univ = Odu
Towson > GMU

Oh.....and athletically Umd has more national championships than all the schools in Virginia put together Uncoordinated and bad at math is no way to go thrugh life!

Is Towson/St Mary's really considered better than GMU/JMU. DD (from MD) rising senior is looking at applying to JMU, GMU and St Mary's.

This is a two year old thread.

Maryland is a good school but it is really lame to try to make the school look good by focusing on some horrific events at the superior schools of a neighboring state.

Also, don't forget that Virginia also has W & M, Mason, Madison, ODU, VCU, Christopher Newport, Radford--all state schools. Maryland has College Park and Baltimore County and then.... Frostburg, Eastern Shore, Bowie State--ouch. Can't count Hopkins because it is private and the kids who go there are quick to let you know.

I see what you did there...trying to tie VT to far more prestigious UVa... More like UMBC or GMU... But not UVa, get real 800 SAT
