What is in the Virginia water causing violence and mayhem at campuses.

I spent many years living near Charlottesville, and don't consider it a scary or violent little city. Honestly, I'm surprised to hear about the crime rate, because I never felt afraid in parking lots or walking around at night there.

But please don't take as true what you read on DCUM.

Do the research ... It's pretty high. The amazing thing is college park has an amazingly low violent crime rate. It's the lowest in the acc probably since it has campus, city , county and lots of state police covering it to look at the coeds!

What's in the water in Maryland state campuses? Just a year ago, there was a roomate murder at Bowie State. The victim had been playing the wrong music.

Other state campuses have had to confront fatal violence among students. In April 2010, a Frostburg State University student was fatally shot by a fellow student who claimed self-defense and was later sentenced to five years in prison for voluntary manslaughter.

In 2003, a University of Maryland, College Park student was shot in the head in a parking garage by her former boyfriend, who then killed himself. She survived her injuries.

Two years later, a student, apparently angry about having been taunted by party-goers, set fire to a fraternity satellite house, killing another student whom he did not know. The student was sentenced to 37 years in prison.

Is it time to send our kids to Virginia schools?

Maybe the crime rate is low because the police think nothing of issuing a beating themselves.

And who can forget Len Bias? So so sad.

Bias was an icon.. Like Jim Morrison or bob marley . Everybody loved Lenny who was a gentle soul in the body of a superman. His legacy changed the perception of recreational drug use forever. If a body like that could die anybody could. Umd is proud to have Lenny as a graduate who in school was a good guy and one of the greatest athletes ever seen and in death teaches a powerful lesson and saves lives. Unlike the UVA and VT atrocities that are so horrible it just grosses people out.

. Falls way short. mass murder, mass woundings, beheadings, fort hood mass murder, roving assault gangs, abduction murders and suicide epidemics are national in scope and happening in close succession. The Bowie state and frostburg cases are bad I haven't researched va lower level schools like Norfolk state but I'm sure it's a show. The Umd arson guy turned himself in because he didn't think he hurt anybody and was devastated.

Umd guy , thanks for all the interesting info. I looked into the crime rates and was astonished at College Park being lower than all the other schools in its conference. I also had no clue that Umd grads created so many life altering companies and inventions. I checked all the other Acc schools and it's amazing, the other schools even Duke, Unc, Georgia Tech have no huge impactful graduate contributions while Umd has so many. I also didn't know Umd has more national champions than any Acc school. My son is looking at Umd for computer science but it has become almost impossible to get in. I heard they have a program where you get wait listed and can take classes at night and be enrolled if you have a 3.5 in spring. Is that true?

Not 'UMd guy", but a few years ago, my friend's son was admitted but it was to start spring semester, and so he took some core courses at a community college in the fall that UMd gave him credit for when he started.

You can do this at any college on earth except maybe Harvard.

Speaking of Harvard... I am astonished at the number of 50k / yr schools that are NOT Harvard! I tell my kids no 50 k schools except Harvard...which they have no chance, so...

Bucknell 45k wtf?

GWU is one of the most expensive universities in the nation. And as the tuition went up, do did the school's rankings, perceived prestige and applications!

Too funny. Perhaps College Park now offers an advanced degree in sock puppetry to round out all its cutting-edge innovations.
