OP --I think one of the earliest posters put it best when she said that she doesn't really think about you because she's thinking about herself. I really don't think most people give strangers more than a quick second of their thoughts ....unless that stranger is particularly weird or dangerous looking.
I know it's hard -- but try not to care what others think. |
OP, are you really 46 years old? No offense, but you sound like you're in middle school. Why do you even care what strangers think about your purse?? They are strangers, for crying out loud! |
This makes no sense. It isn't judgmental to say you are thinner or prettier than average, nor is it judgmental to pitty someone. |

Oh I also want to say that I don't wear designer exercise clothes. I wear free cotton tshirts and $14 shorts from Target. I want clothes that are easy to wash and dry and that I don't have to worry about.

If you can compare your own looks against someone else's (i.e. I am prettier or skinnier) and then conclude that you are above avergae in looks or thinness, then that is JUDGING yourself against others. Honest Answer for OP - when I see the flabby arms, thighs squeezed into too-small leggings and badly fitting bras my first thought is "do they know how awful that looks?", secondly, it serves as inspiration for me to not eat badly and go exercise more.
And when I see people riding those grocery carts b/c they can barely walk, getting extra large bags of cookies and slabs of american cheese, I do shake my head (inside) but what can you do? Yes, I understand some of the obese have underlying health issues that caused the weight gain, but some are just overeaters. I have a friend who is like this, one of the smartest & funniest people I know. He used to eat take out food every single day. Chinese, indian, you name it. Now he has a heart arrythmia, M.E., borderline diabetes and high blood pressure and weights about 500 lbs. Now that his heart is acting up, I really think one day I am going to get a message from his wife that he had a heart-attack. |
I am too self absorbed to notice people around me. I'm either napping on the metro, reading or lost in my own thoughts. I just don't look at people around me, unless they are particularly striking. And this is DC, you don't see striking people every day. |
Dress to compliment your own assets and don't worry so much about anyone else's. Simple enough? I would hope after a certain age you dress for yourself, not your neighbor. |

NP here, what I cannot get my head around is those thin women who can work a full (say 50h) work week, take care of 4 kids, look after an elderly parent, AND make the time to go to the gym..spring and fall I can sometimes steal a minute from work to get outside for a 15-20 minute walk in street clothes (no time to do all that changing/showering, and I don't take a lunch so I can get home to relieve the sitter). But that's not really much exercise...summer and much of winter, not possible to do that and get back to work and look immediately professional. Me, I stress eat salty things when I get home and drink a glass or two of wine to unwind...that+ no real exercise means am 30 lbs overweight. Eat great the rest of the time, veg, fruit, modest portions, low carb, high protein.
So my hat's off to those who manage this and stay slim--go ahead and judge me, I'll bear up (and try to do better!). But I wonder whether adequate leisure time is a necessary part of thinness, unless you have super genes? |
OP, first of all, GOOD FOR YOU for trying to get healthy! Losing a pound a week is a totally healthy way to do things. Those people who do a prune diet or whatever will lose lots fast but gain it back. Lifestyle changes are totally the way to go. Here is what I think when I see people like you: Poor lady, I wish a good friend would pull her aside to explain why capris make overweight people look even bigger. BTW, an A-line denim skirt will be cooler and look MUCH better than capris, and feel cooler. I may wonder if you are hotter than i am because you are lugging around more weight than me. When I see people like you at the gym, I think "YOU GO, GIRL!" which is my version of what my older sister thinks, "RUN FATTIE, RUN!" but she's a bitch. |
I have four kids and a full-time job. While we don't look after an elderly parent we do have a dog. So each day I walk the dog for 20 minutes or so. I eat lunch at my desk and am lucky to have a job with flex hours. So I can totally work from 6:30 to 9:30 at home. Go work out, shower, get to work, Work through lunch (eating at my desk), and then go home. Sometimes I stress-eat also, but I buy foods for that. A mixture of nuts, stone fruits in summer, oranges or apples in winter, etc. The dog-walk is my unwinding time. Or, I'll get home and do 15 or so minutes of yoga after work, with the kids talking at me and crawling all around. I do not speak during yoga, and the kids usually wind up trying to do it too, which is cute. Hope that helps. |
I will bite. We are probably considered well off and I'm skinny. I could care less where you shop and what brand bag you carry.
I may have a slight thought about promising myself never to let myself go. I do have an issue with people who don't wear clothing that does not fit them properly. i.e. fat people wearing clothing that is too small for them. |
