Didn't it really just mock the old testament which you have all made a point to distinguish your beliefs from, so what exactly is the problem?? |
| Ladies, it's time to go back to covering of your heads during church. That rule is in the Old and New Testaments. |
Or that pesky logic and reason gets in the way of feeling the joy that cannot be objectively observed, but is really there if we "truly open our hearts". :gag: |
Person of faith here. I found the OP quite funny, but then again I don't think homosexuality is a sin. So maybe you define "person of faith" as someone who believes homosexuality is wrong, and is therefore threatened by having the patent absurdity of selective Bible quoting pointed out to them. |
Atheist here. I think you and I could be friends
|
| I loved the link OP posted. And I am not an atheist. |
Actually, I don't believe homosexuality is a sin. You might be surprised to learn the pastor of my church is gay. But most of this thread is about faith-bashing (like so many other DCUM threads), so I wouldn't blame anybody for concluding that OP's post is ill-intentioned. I see it over and over from atheist posters - they insult people of faith, and if anyone tries to respond in any way, they're accused of either (a) having no sense of humor, or (b) being a martyr. It's a game that somebody compared to trolling, and I don't disagree. So no, I don't blame anybody a bit for being insulted by OP's link. |

I'm an atheist, but not the ranting atheist. Wouldn't it make more sense just to ignore the one or two people who post about myths and imaginary sky friends? There are one or two on every thread that talks about religion.
Step 1: ignore them Step 2: if you can't ignore them, don't post generalizations that atheists are rude or cranky. Some of you accuse us of all being the same, but you're complaining about being lumped in with people of faith like Fred Phelps. You're not all the same. We're not all the same. If ranting atheist and some of you could get that through your heads, this would be a more civilized discussion. |
|
The thing is, it seems like more than just 1, or even two, ranting atheists. Possibly it's one crazy sock puppet who posts all the time. I don't have telepathic powers (despite having faith), but the differences in style among the various posters suggests to me it's many people posting insults. Yes, I agree, there are some thoughtful atheists here, but unfortunately they seem to be in the minority (again, unless you go with the theory that it's just one or two crazy sock puppets).
I could turn this around, and ask why you don't just ignore the one fundamentalist poster here who seems to be against homosexuality. I find her embarrassing, too, but I don't see more than one poster like her. Yet you atheists immediately blast back with condemnations of all people of faith. How about a more reasoned response, that she might actually listen too. At the same time you wouldn't be giving people like me a bad opinion of all atheists? |

Maybe it's just me, but I didn't see the original link as a joke. Rather, it's a commentary on the hypocrisy of those who point to the Bible as a (actually, as THE) reason homosexuality is wrong. Yes, the language is humorous, but the point is anything but . . . peoply using religion to justify their own personal prejudices simply isn't funny. Especially when they ignore other directives in the Bible with which they they don't happen to disagree.

The original link is "funny" in terms of sarcasm, not that it's a "joke" per se, in my opinion. I agree with what you said here - it's a commentary on the hypocrisy of those who use the bible as a weapon. |
|
So to raise again a question others have raised, if the original link was sarcasm not a joke, and if the goal was to point out hypocrisy, then why do some of you find it so wrong that some posters actually responded to it?
Sorry, but I'm just so sick of the dynamic here! OP posts a link with a serious intent, but anybody who responds to it is accused, by numerous posters here, as either lacking a funny bone or being a martyr. This is some dynamic. |
I don't believe anyone actually responded to the hypocrisy point. There was some "the catechism says XYZ," and scripture quotes, and then it devolved into insults and hurt feelings (on both sides). The thread went sideways. I admit that I just skimmed the insults and interminable debate over whether the insults were justified, so maybe I missed the discussion of the apparent hypocrisy. If so, please point me to it. And if someone wants to address it now, I'd be interested - and I promise to be respectful (although I make no promises for anyone else). |

Serious question for Christians who rely ONLY on the Bible for their beliefs:
How can you be sure your particular interpretation is the right one? |
| I think very few of the original posters who responded actually read the article in the link. And it shows, and it's why the thread went sideways, as the PP said. |
