15:04: if you want to talk on your cell phone at the club, you should be in your car, not in the parking lot. Seriously.

My SIL is so braggy - she grew up in an upper middle class family in a UMC/wealthy town. I guess she grew up comparing herself to everyone else and what they had. She is a lawyer, as is my brother, and all she talks about is how much she makes/promotions/responsibility etc. its awkward. my brother is super passive so he would not say anything if it bothered him. their kids are kind of the same way and can be awful.

We grew up comfortable but from generations of "comfortable or more than comfortable" means. We are all well educated. We (4 siblings) are all comfortable or much, much more than comfortable now, but she has no idea what is in mine or my brothers' bank account (I do because I'm give my brothers financial advice). It's just really weird that she lies about how much everything costs when on paper she is doing just fine and has no reason to project. She's also not flashy at all, so I think she just likes to exaggerate about her expenses; even though her mortgage is paid off and they drive nice, domestic cars.

She is just really weird about that club. I don't think they hang out there that much, except to play golf. Her husband uses it for business dinners and they use the pool in the summer. Weird.

Technically you are not allowed to conduct business there. It is strictly a social club. (although we all know that the line is very fuzzy)

What nice club does NOT ban cell phones??? I thought that was pretty standard.

Chevy Chase Club is about to spray their golf course with methyl bromide, a chemical banned in most other countries because of its severe adverse environmental and health effects. Its use in US is being phased out and would already have been banned entirely but for lobbying by golf course owners. WP reported this recently; sorry I don't have time to find the link right now.

Hey, Biff and Muffy -- What a great place to socialize while absorbing toxic fumes and exposing your neighbors to them!

This. It's hard to even fathom anyone spending that kind of money so frivolously when some of us don't even have a house to live in.

It is their money and they can spend it how they wish. A few people have $50,000 watches, you can tell time just as well on a $1,000 watch, but it's their money and they can spend $100,000 on a watch, country club membership, whatever. Some people don't have a car and some people drive cars that cost more than $75,000. Again, it is their money. There is not obligation, moral or legal, for the very rich to buy a house or car for anyone else. There is a moral obligation to give to charity but no legal obligation.

Frankly, I enjoy seeing the very rich enjoying themselves as it gives me a better perspective on my own life. I can't have their life style but I like my life and I am happy.

My SIL is a member. I don't know the dues or initiation fee. She's a legacy. Her parents are Republicans, and her father was a Federal judge. We ate dinner there once, and it seemed like a very nice place, very pleasant. I'd join if it weren't exclusive or expensive, but it sounds like it is both. And I'm a Democrat, so I probably wouldn't fit in anyway.

I grew up in a family where everyone belonged to country clubs. I would not dream of joining one. I don't share the country club values of my family members, even though I do enjoy the nice meals and parties when I'm invited. DH and I belong to a public pool that requires dues, but does not exclude anyone. It's not expensive, but its expensive enough to exclude very poor people. The water is wet, the pool is clean, and my kids enjoy it.

I agree with PP that people can spend their money as they wish, but I don't condone spending excessive amounts of money on things that can be bought for far less money and still provide the same function. I'd never spend $100K on a car or a watch when I can buy a perfectly good car or watch for a fraction of that amount and send the rest of the money to Haiti or give it to some other worthy cause I believe in. Cartier and CCC don't need my money, but the lives of Hatians or poor children in the District would be improved immeasurably by that money.

I for one, do not enjoy seeing the very rich spend large amounts of money on frivolous things. Rome burns while the rich play, and I, for one, find it sickening.

pp here. I meant to say that our pool does not exclude anyone on the basis of color, religion, ethnic background, education, social status, employment, etc. But you have to have some money to join our pool, so the only people it excludes are those who do not possess the very small amount of money it costs to join. I'm OK with that because the cost of the pool pays for the expense of running it, but does not buy exclusivity, social status or any of those intangibles that come with a membership in a pricey, exclusive club like CCC.

This comment was made nearly a year ago, but it is the hands-down FUNNIEST post ever on DCUM. And I bet that Jesus was not a Southern Republican!
