What Schools are Considered 2T?

GCS is a solid school, but also very much a full pay place. They dont have the endowment TTs have. They dont have the college placement of 2Ts like Regis or St Ann's or, if we were adding publics, schools like Bronx Science or Hunter.

I put GCS on the same tier as Beacon and Poly Prep and Berkeley Carroll. I think that's 3T.

And if I wanted to open a can of worms: I'd also put Avenues in this tier. It's a good education with solid college counseling and outcomes. Also pretty much full pay, but it is what it is

If you are going to be very granular and say 2T is just Regis, St. Ann's, and maybe Riverdale, then I would agree that Grace is 3T. Though if also being that granular, I would likely differentiate it from Berkeley Carroll and make that 4T. If you are doing a broader view of 2T then Grace sneaks in.

Agreed that Avenues is an odd duck. Probably agree with you on the tiering. But it draws a different crowd. And I know some people who sent their kid for elementary (particularly those who live downtown for whom it was convenient) and maxed out the language portion then applied out as they felt that that was its primary differentiating factor and the HS was not as good.

Okay, I'll try. I agree that GCS is getting rising in ranks - just 3-4 years ago they'd take anyone who could pay and was tier 4 - but it's not tier 2. I don't have deep insight into all these schools so this is just my take as a person who has two kids in private high schools in nyc, has been through the application process twice as an unhooked family, and follows college placement somewhat. I'm sure there are glaring errors.

I would put Xavier, FP and Dominican in the same tier as Loyola. I know some very smart kids at Xavier and Dominican. I don’t think Loyola’s any better. They have smaller class sizes but fewer extracurricular opportunities.

I don’t think CSH and Nightingale are particularly hard to get into. Regis, on the other hand, is extremely selective.

Is basis really 4t. It seemed super stressful and so focused on AP and just gave us bad vibes.

Where is CGPS?

I think riverdale is Tt.

k-8s aren't in tiers

riverdale is sometimes included in TT, but the OG TTs are the 7 the previous poster listed.

I agree loyola is tier 4

I'm the one who has been defending Grace (though I have no direct ties) but I think this is generally really good (and I'm OK with Grace where it is given these groupings). Only minor quibbles. I have boys so don't know the girl's schools well but I don't think all three of Marymount, Sacred Heart and Nightingale are T2 - that is overloading that tier with girls schools and I just don't think that is the case. But I'm not sure which I would drop.

I know Trevor is much debated but I could make a compelling argument for it now being T3. It is basically the weakest T3 or the strongest T4, but I just don't see it being grouped with most of the other T4s.

Not a big CGPS fan and it pains me to say it but it is probably T3.

Agree that Poly is still T3 though on the decline.

I think you also missed Leman which I think everyone would agree is T4.

Nice job - thanks!

If you had to rank them based on rigor and difficulty of admission, where would the K-8D be though?

I don't think it's overloading, there are more girls schools than boys. Always has been. Which is why it's harder for boys. If you have a girl and you're open to single sex education, you have a lot more schools on your list than boys. Complicating things even further are the all-boys grade schools that end at 8/9. More boys than girls end up going to boarding school from NYC for this reason

Why is Poly on the decline?

lol, the Trevor hater went nuclear arguing it was 3T. He or should’ve said it was 4T at that point

Unclear why Poly is declining. I wouldn't swear to it and others might feel differently. But that is the sense I get from conversations with various people applying and there. I think there is a somewhat new administration that isn't great. I feel confident enough to say this (I don't like to make totally baseless statements, unlike many others on DCUM), but I will admit my lack of full confidence in this so if others feel strongly otherwise, go for it.

We applied our child to kindergarten this year from a downtown feeder, and I didn’t hear of anyone who applied to Marymount, Sacred Heart, or Nightingale who didn’t get in. I also didn’t hear of anyone who put any of those schools as their first choice. People who wanted BCS and didn’t get any admits enrolled at Marymount and Nightingale.

On the flip side, I know several people who got flat rejected from Grace, including two families at our school that wanted it and ended up at one of the above schools. We went into the process thinking it was a safety admit, but our PSD said they had around 7-8 spots for girls and boys (so 16ish total) for kindergarten because of all the siblings. It’s by no means TT, but my read is a lot of the wealthy people (presumably with options) who want to stay downtown are enrolling their kids there with the new head of school versus moving uptown or commuting. Interested to see if people stay for the long term or exmit out.
Anonymous
Basis average sat is 1490. 55 percent go to t25 school. How is that tier 4?
Anonymous
Avenues should be T4. They still have openings after Feb Deadline means it’s not fully enrolled. The other T3 schools all have long waiting lists.
Anonymous
For the sake of completeness add Dwight Englewood if you are including Hackley. I know a bunch of Manhattan families there. Mainly UWS. I think it is on the lower end of 3T.
Anonymous
I think you have to look at outcomes in addition to admissions. Marymount and Sacred Heart and Avenues still doing better than GCS. Not sure about nightingale.

Basis has a different issue - a lot of people go to private school to make connections, it's a part of what their kids are getting that they value. While all the above schools have connected families, Basis does not. I'd probably like that about Basis, but it's not aspirational.

I think this list is largely good. I'd move loyola down a tier and nightingale down a tier, but it's close enough.
