POTUS calls U.S Olympic skier "a real Loser"

The Olympics has not been politics free since at least 1936, when Mr Jesse Owens took the field in Hitler’s Berlin. What makes you think it has ever really been politics free. The USA boycotted an entire Olympics over politics. I’m sure some countries and athletes may boycott the USA over politics.

Actually other leaders do respond to athletes critical of their own countries when representing them at international competitions. They just don’t do it quite as bluntly.

The president had a right to criticize the skier, but he was rather blunt about it. A better way would have been to say that you’re disappointed in the skier’s opinion as expressed at an Olympics presser. While everyone is entitled to their opinion, there is a time and place to express it. Other athletes are proud to represent the United States and such negativity undermines team unity.

Or, Trump could simply not behave in a manner that draws the ire of the world and the majority of the country.

Which fields should and shouldn't be politics-free? Many politicians are lawyers before they run for office. So clearly politics is ok for lawyers. Some enter politics after a career in business like George W. Bush. Some enter politics after a career in entertainment like Reagan. Trump was both a businessman and an entertainer and spent years expressing himself politically. So clearly those are fine. What about Jim Jordan and Tommy Tuberville, who entered politics after being athletes and coaches?

If you ask me, anybody not subject to the Hatch Act is free to express themselves politically.

Trump is just reflecting what most Americans think. The guy felt he had to say his opinion. Trump can speak too. Trumps opinion is more entertaining so it kind of wins the debate and that's why the left is furious 24/7

And Team USA is entitled to prohibit them from representing the US in international competition if it so chooses. Sports teams can bench players and leagues can ban them. Actions have consequences.

Here the skier’s comments were in poor taste. He didn’t have to answer the reporter’s question by giving a divisive sound bite. He could have said he was representing the US, a country that has supported his Olympic dream. Anything beyond his athletic performance didn’t belong at an Olympics presser.

I appreciated his honest response.

As the world’s foremost expert in being a loser, I guess Trump is fully qualified to provide this opinion.

Most Americans do not agree with Trump. If you got out of your media bubble, you would understand that.

So you don't want the best athletes competing for the country, only the ones that are supplicant to Dear Leader.

Team USA is run by the USOPC, which is a government corporation that must still abide by the first amendment. They cannot in fact ban someone from competing because of their political speech.

He’s entitled to his opinion, but I get the impression that he is trying to straddle a line in order to keep or land sponsors/endorsements. POTUS was pointing out, albeit crudely, that the skier represents the US and that’s all he needed to say.

Why can't the skier speak about his views? Moreover, why is a skier subject to more scrutiny than the President? Perhaps the person who shouldn't have said anything is Trump.

The skier is representing USA and if he isn't about the usa he should resign and find another team f that skier socialist

Surely you just or you are just the dumbest, vilest person to spew your hypocrisy. Donald Trump who is the POTUS and represents USA has said far worse things about he USA. Maybe he should resign and find another team like Belarus or Russia, since he likes those countries better than the US. In 2024, Trump called the US the garbage can of America and we have a lot of bad genes. In his 2017, inaugural address Trump described the US as a dystopian picture of cities, factories, and safety that he was going to change. It is a shame there are so many Americans like you PP and Trump hate the USA so much.

Fixed that for you.

We know you mean MAGA when you say Americans and MAGA are the largest single group of spineless cowards the world has ever known.
