I don't want them to open, I just don't get why they didn't call it already.

I liked how PG County did it - they said they are closed through Thurs. Friday is TBD. That way families can plan accordingly, no guessing or waiting around for an official announcement, and the reality is the neighborhood streets and school parking lots can't sufficiently be cleared until then.
Done and done.

Wish fcps would follow that same type of forward thinking and announcement.

Then we’d have a lot of people complaining that the made the call too early.

Tomorrow Wednesday? Unlikely especially due to the scheduled early release. FCPS has a pretty consistent approach of always ending a multi-day string of snow days with a 2-hour delay. That would create a very short school day tomorrow. Much easier for them to just call it a week and restart on Monday. (Storm this weekend now looks like it will miss us to the south.)

I’m not sure why posters think they would do a 2 hour delay combined with an early release. If they decide on a 2 hour delay the end of the school day would switch to the regular dismissal time.

They aren't getting rid of the early release.

If they had a 2 hour delay they would.

That’s what they used to do with early dismissal Mondays. A delay would push the release time to the later bell.

They won't do it because it's a before a 4-day weekend and many families are headed out of town tomorrow afternoon. I know that a substantial group in our school is going skiing. There wouldn't be anyone there for the last 2 hours of the day.

But this discussion is also academic because school will be closed tomorrow.

A small group will bicker, but a much larger percentage will appreciate the heads-up to officially close through Wed.

Nah, nothing significant has changed since Sunday except the main roads. Neighborhoods remain impassable, turn lanes in major intersections are covered, 200 school lots need clearing, and the 10k kids who are walkers will walk in the street.

The privilege...close schools because we are going skiing!

You seem to be missing the point. But please carry on.

I'm not even sure the federal govt will open (at least on time) tomorrow. The roads are horrible and only 1 lane on the 14th street bridge.
Not sure if metro/vre is still on a reduced schedule

I’m thinking a 2 hour delay on the Feds tomorrow. I think their hand was forced for today by Metro/VRE/buses not running normally but they aren’t going to want 3 days in a row off, even if most of us are still very snowed in.

And yes - FCPS will 100% be closed tomorrow.

Teacher here: I can’t get out of my neighborhood and don’t see that changing in the next 18 hours. And if I could get out, my kid’s childcare has closed through at least Thursday. I know at least 3 other colleagues are in a similar childcare situation.

So if you do rush to open the buildings to get kids in for one shortened day, they’re going to end up in the gym or auditorium twiddling their thumbs most of the day because there isn’t enough staff to hold regular classes.

I guess if you only want the building open so your kids aren’t at home, this is fine with you, but there’s going to be zero learning.

I'm the PP who asked and want them closed. Good luck to you and thanks for your perspective.

I'm asking the question because FCPS is the one who didn't already decide to close tomorrow. I don't understand that, but I've predicted what they'd do wrong before.

You’re misunderstanding the reply. FCPS could very well do a 2 hr delay tomorrow. In that case it will not longer be an early dismissal day. The rule is a 2 hour delay on an already scheduled early dismissal extends the school day to normal end time.

However, to me it doesn’t make sense to haul these kids in for half a day when the rest of the week is off.

This is exactly why I wont send my kids tomorrow regardless. Plus, one teacher has already had to send multiple talking points messages begging parents to keep their sick kids home. I just know that people would medicate their sick kids knowing it'll last for the half day so they can get some work done before another 2 days off and then everyone will get sick.

The buses cannot get down neighborhood streets. It’s a no go. I live on a corner - the street in front of my house is better than the one on the side but even then it’s only plowed wide enough for one car to squeeze through. The other street, which is a hill slick with ice- absolutely no go for a bus.
