Link of that altercation ? |
| Why can’t they bring back mark twain and the other alternative schools? |
Did any County council member oppose this? |
And why didn't that school go into a lockdown and make the news like Northwood? |
You won't find it because it didn't make the news. The principal is very good at suppressing bad news from getting out at Watkins Mill. |
And that's why this forum exists. |
Will teachers want to teach there? Will they hire police officers to teach? Social workers? Who? |
There is an alternative school: Blair E. Ewing with two campuses. It is poorly run, but it is there. |
The question is, why aren't we expanding the capacity of Blair E. Ewing instead of shuffling kids who clearly need more supports and supervision to different high schools, only for the inevitable worst-case scenario (jail) to be the final outcome? |
Because MCPS has not prioritized this need. Blair G. Ewing has been allowed to languish for years, not to mention the gatekeeping making it difficult to place students there. When was the last time the BOE/Supe/Chiefs paid any attention to Alt Programs? |
sad. Board meeting this week https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1304663.page |
Watkins Mill HS principal sent out an email explaining why the school was on lockdown/hold. |
| They need more alternative programs and it should be easier to get kids into them |
| SESES is ineffective and a waste of resources for most kids. It is basically there to just try and push kids to graduate so they are not MCPS’ problem any longer. These kids have many issues and no one knows what to do with them |
I wish schools weren’t so focused on graduation rate as a measure of success. The students who have severe disciplinary problems and aren’t putting in any effort should be allowed to drop out after 10th grade. Then schools can focus their efforts on kids who want an education. |
