This is pretty shocking. People need to wake up. This country is awash with guns and it is easy to get hold of a gun. For all we know, many kids could be roaming around with a gun in their possession. It is a new reality

Absolutely not. I'm just saying that safety is not an issue that technology will fix.

It is a people, poverty and community issue. MCPS needs to partner with the Northwood community to understand root causes and actually solve the problems.

That starts with being transparent about the safety issues in the system, engaging the community on coming up with the needed solutions and resources, and hold school and system leadership accountable for their missteps and failures.

MCPS, thus far, has been unwilling to do those things. They just quickly shift from one lockdown to the next, insisting everything is ok and that these incidents are one-off anomalies when they aren't. They're part of a pattern that needs to be addressed systemically.

MCPS cannot solve societal problems. MCPS needs to focus on teaching. Teenagers past the age of 16 should be allowed to drop out of school if they are not interested in an education. MCPS cannot rescue every student.

Small, localized schools and school districts (see PA model). Each locality elects its down school board and decisions are made hyper-locally on what security is needed and will be funded at each school. Enough with this one size fits all and shifting cluster boundaries every few years!

I’m a parent who isn’t a big fan of the metal detector idea. I just think it wil result in long lines to get into school for the kids who do care about education and the other kids will easily figure out a way to get around them (like friends propping open doors or using printed ghost guns).

I would support:
Putting violent kids into virtual school for remainder of year at least
Not forcing kids over 16 to attend school if they don’t want to
Lots more security guards and SROs to walk the halls and stand near bathrooms and establish relationships with students so students can report if they hear rumors that someone is carrying a gun or making threats
Maybe something like an anonymous reporting app for kids to report potential guns or drug dealing (lots of workplaces now have anonymous reporting apps to report things like fraud embezzlement etc)

When Magruder had the shooting a few years ago, that was a ghost gun too.
