One student taken into custody. School on lockdown.

This moron has done nothing to make schools safer and the fact children went to school in this ice and snow today proves he is a weak, incompetent leader.

I’m so glad my Northwood student didn’t go to school today. MCPS needs to buckle down on security. Northwood needs more security guards for sure

We got non functional vape detectors before we got metal detectors.

Do you mean Taylor has access to their homes and finances if you can prevent these kids from buying guns?

Or do you mean metal detectors that some parents & politicians don’t want because of the impression that it’s a prison and the school to prison pipeline, blah blah blah.

No parents have said rhey dont want metal detectors but if the leadership at mcps bends its knee to a few parents thats even worse.

Taylor is having the worst week ever. Two fumbled weather related calls a lockdown at Northwood?

Weapons detectors will not solve the guns in school issue. PG has them and they still have gun issues.

So your answer is to do nothing until a student or teacher is seriously hurt or worse?

Absolutely not. I'm just saying that safety is not an issue that technology will fix.

It is a people, poverty and community issue. MCPS needs to partner with the Northwood community to understand root causes and actually solve the problems.

That starts with being transparent about the safety issues in the system, engaging the community on coming up with the needed solutions and resources, and hold school and system leadership accountable for their missteps and failures.

MCPS, thus far, has been unwilling to do those things. They just quickly shift from one lockdown to the next, insisting everything is ok and that these incidents are one-off anomalies when they aren't. They're part of a pattern that needs to be addressed systemically.

MCPS cannot solve societal problems. MCPS needs to focus on teaching. Teenagers past the age of 16 should be allowed to drop out of school if they are not interested in an education. MCPS cannot rescue every student.

Why are they not saying whether the gun was loaded or unloaded

First off, that cannot be the case when MCPS is more than half of the county budget. If they're going to be that much of the services experienced by county residents, they need to be part of the solution. School is also the place where children spend the most time outside of their home. They have to be part of the solution.

Second, that is definitely not the expectation of the state of Maryland, who has established the community schools model and views schools as hubs for community resources. Schools are a community resource, which is why they're open to the public for use and rental. Schools are an inextricable part of our community, so you can't say MCPS cannot solve societal problems, when providing a free education to children in itself is in fact an attempt to solve a societal problem.

They're probably scare of raising community fears even more than they already have.
