They're probably scare of raising community fears even more than they already have.

Student will be back in MCPS next week.

Do you mean Taylor has access to their homes and finances if you can prevent these kids from buying guns?

Or do you mean metal detectors that some parents & politicians don’t want because of the impression that it’s a prison and the school to prison pipeline, blah blah blah.

DC PS HS has metal detectors

Well actually he had time to make an unnecessary video about "rain" or something tho so maybe it's not the worst but it's up there among the worst in his 74+ weeks on the job.

One student taken into custody. School on lockdown.

Wait. Are you saying it's another high school this time and not the usual ones??

So your answer is to do nothing until a student or teacher is seriously hurt or worse?

Absolutely not. I'm just saying that safety is not an issue that technology will fix.

It is a people, poverty and community issue. MCPS needs to partner with the Northwood community to understand root causes and actually solve the problems.

That starts with being transparent about the safety issues in the system, engaging the community on coming up with the needed solutions and resources, and hold school and system leadership accountable for their missteps and failures.

MCPS, thus far, has been unwilling to do those things. They just quickly shift from one lockdown to the next, insisting everything is ok and that these incidents are one-off anomalies when they aren't. They're part of a pattern that needs to be addressed systemically.

We spend billions on technology for airports and borders and still kids are able to get past it sometimes. Drugs and weapons still find a way onto planes, trains, and to cross the border. Its not about not doing nothing, but not over reacting and believing that one piece of technology is going to solve a societal problem.

Thats the bottom line on why mcps is unsafe. Not vape detectors, not metal detectors, not scapegoating about not solving society problems. The bottom line is that mcps no longer removes violent students from our schools.

Technology should be part of the solution. It is not 100% effective but it is a tool that should be used in addition to other safeguarding measures. We need metal detectors asap. And more trained security guards.

Possession of a loaded gun is a serious offence. I believe it will be an extra long suspension (6 months or longer) and he will be moved to a different HS
