Juneteenth

No one cares. It should be a floating holiday, so other federal but not national holidays like Columbus Day, MLk and Presidents’ Day. Lots of states don’t grant those off beyond a govt job.

“Juneteenth” is a week or two before July 4th national holiday and a PItA if my kids’ summer camps are closed. We both work in global jobs so no we dont get every country’s latest pet project days off. And don’t take the day off for dates of formal endings of whatever war.

Thankfully the kids are at sleepaway camp so that doesn’t shut down for the day.

It was never extra, they downgraded some other Monday federal holiday which you now work and your kids don’t go to school. Enjoy!

We should have one federal holiday each month so workers have one long weekend each month. We need more holidays, not less.

His bizarre stance should be a red flag.

Yes!!

Less school, less work, less stuff open every month!! The key to success is clear!

The end of slavery isn’t specific to Texas, but Juneteenth is. The more logical date to celebrate would be the ratification of the 13th amendment, which legally ended slavery for everyone in the US.

This. They chose the wrong date.

Hope that’s not a random summer date in the middle of the week that 90% of the country works through anyhow.

Is it over-weighted to have two out of 11 national holidays dedicated to black americans when there are zero dedicated to other groups, except christmas and veterans day?

It’s all of February too, so maybe June should be the second Black History Month of the year as well.

+1

I am in DC at a large and very diverse workplace and locals love it

Me too.
No one wants to work or come in the office before and now they don’t have to.

Someone needs to explain the Southern Strategy to you.

Well, who doesn't love an extra paid day off?

Juneteenth was a big deal in DC long before it was a Federal holiday.

Lol. Nope.

Lived here since 2004 in the private sector. Nope it was not.

So go to work. LOL. We know you will just enjoy the day like everyone else and are just signaling you're not "woke" (aka, you are not capable of not being a jerk).

Are the markets closed in June 19th?

Is day care and summer school closed?

Or is this another Club Fed, usps “holiday?”

More like vice versa

This is understandable, but not particularly relatable for most Americans.

African Americans are roughly 12% of the population, but they are the most vocal and persistently aggrieved minority group no matter how many programs are funded, leaders elected, artists recognized, etc.. They carry the scars of slavery and discrimination seemingly without end.

I will personally never feel any excitement or affinity for Juneteenth, but I suppose it has a role to play in teaching part of our shared history.

I learned during George Floyd riots and Juneteenth lobbying days that it’s racist to eat watermelon anywhere in the world or America.

Most of the country is not aware it’s a day off for federal level workers. Oh well.

It’s an interesting bit and story of history, but there are millions of those. Most of the 1870s country, world and current population considered the final surrender date the end of the civil war/ slavery plus the continuation of America as one.

Juneteenth has nothing to do with DEI.

Yes it does. It was made a government holiday at peak DEI, peak BLM riots and protests. Same as all the school, park, statue cancelings and renamings.

@realDonaldTrump
Too many non-working holidays in America. It is costing our Country $BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to keep all of these businesses closed. The workers don’t want it either! Soon we’ll end up having a holiday for every once working day of the year. It must change if we are going to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

We worked plus paid a sitter to entertain our kids for 10 hours. More tax income generated than usual!!!
