The weird rejection is Richmond. Isn't Richmond a mid low tier school in Virginia, a solid safety for most kids? JMU and GMU are definitely higher than Richmond. |
Based on this analysis, Richmond placed 62nd nationally by selectivity, JMU placed 423rd and GMU placed 576th: https://wallethub.com/edu/e/college-rankings/40750 |
I think they meant University of Richmond (a competitive SLAC) not VCU located in Richmond. I agree with other posters saying there are too many reach and safety schools and not targets although it’s hard to say without seeing stats or a budget. I’m sorry your DC is disappointed. My oldest was too but ended up loving their school. |
Note as well that this student was accepted at VCU. |

That sucks OP and unlike many posters here you have my sympathies. Hopefully a waitlist spot may unexpectedly come through.
My daughter didn’t really like about half the schools she applied to either. I know common advice is don’t apply if you don’t like it but after considering tons of safeties and not liking any, she just had to pick the ones she disliked the least and apply to those. She also had a long safety list so ultimately she’d have some choice to make. Mine ended up getting into a reach off a waitlist and has liked it fine. She will now say she doesn’t think it matters as much where she went. I do think unfortunately the school counselors put such a big emphasis on fit trying to get students to spread out their applications across different schools it makes it that much more tough if they don’t get into a school they feel is a fit. Back in our day they said you’re qualified for these 3-4 schools, apply and attend the best of your options. And parents reminiscing about their amazing college experiences at now impossible to get into schools doesn’t help either. I suspect your child will like college better than they think, but can totally understand it’s rough now. |
No. Richmond is a nationally-ranked liberal arts college (ranked 22) with a 22% acceptance rate. You must be confusing it with VCU? Clearly OP’s kid aimed too high and didn’t have enough target schools that they’d want to attend. |
Does U-Richmond track DI? If kid didn’t show real interest - but others from same high school did, the kid would be an auto-reject. |
The school says they do not track DI. |
If she goes to JMU, I gurantee she will want to stay. Guarantee it. |
+1. OP, we are in a similar boat. My son is starting to come around about going to one of his safeties, but he’s definitely disappointed and still hopeful a waitlist offer will come through. Good luck to your child, OP. I hope it all works out! |
Her list doesn't look too balanced to me. There's a big leap between the schools in the rejected tier and the schools in the admitted tier. A middle tier is missing.
When you look at transfer schools, try to look for the schools a tier above her admits but a tier below the rejects. |
