No WL movement---done

DC is heading to a school w/ 80% admit. Stats, awards, research and still waitlisted everywhere. Transfer plans are in the works. Anyone else in the same boat?

I feel bad for you if you think acceptance rate correlates with the quality of a school.

name the schools or don’t post - this is a waste of our time without you naming the schools. Cardinal rule of DCUM, name the school or don’t bother

Not accepted:
- Yale
- Brown
- Gtown
- Columbia
- Emory
- NYU
- Northeastern
- BC
- W&M (In-state)
- UVA (In-state)
- Vanderbilt
- Richmond

Admitted:
- VCU
- JMU
- GMU
- Rutgers
- PSU
- Drexel
- Hofstra
- Syracuse

Will not be disclosing which she will attend.

So, your child was a "he" and is now a "she."

We can tell which school she or he likely is attending. It's not Syracuse or PSU.

Likely, it's Drexel or JMU because those two have around an 80% acceptance rate.

What’s wrong with PSU and Syracuse? Those are solid universities. Hope you and your kid come around!

Sorry OP.
But for all others reading and learning, this list is reach heavy and safety heavy. This is a WHAT NOT TO DO when creating a college list.

Makes zero sense to apply to 8 schools kid didn’t even like. Waste of time, waste of money. Does your school have a college counselor??

What a random assortment of schools. You got really bad advice. So bad I think you are trolling.

Where are SLACs? Wesleyan? Denison? Davidson?
Schools like Lehigh? Bucknell? Wake? GW?

Where was your DC waitlisted? That is probably the best indication of how much your DC overshot.

My DC had a similar, not quite so top heavy list. Waitlisted at NYU and Wesleyan, probably would have gotten in if had done ED at either of those or Emory.

DC is finishing their sophomore year at their “safety” LAC. Got into a few higher ranked schools (R1s ranked in the 30s in USN) but decided in on the LAC because of some attractive factors. Thought about transferring this year for a minute, applied to one school and got in (top 25) but decided to stay for a variety of factors. Felt good to get in but ultimately not worth it.

Will likely go to grad school.

Your student has some good choices.

My guess is the stats were not as high, relatively speaking, as OP supposed. Nor were the ECs as impressive. Not getting into Richmond or W&M is telling. A bad list.

What does your daughter want to study? Does she have certain areas of academic interest? Encourage her to Look at her current choices and see which ones might offer opportunities that match her interests.

Another vote for Syracuse!

And also echoing the view that there is no sense applying to schools you don't like, high admission rate or not. It's not a safety if you don't see yourself thriving there.
Anonymous
20 schools!?!!!?!? That’s insane. How quality could the applications be with that number. You set your kid up for heartbreak here. 6-8 is the answer with a few in each bucket.

As the parent- you let this happen and it is your fault. You are now in cleanup and need to encourage your cherub to be happy where she is going. She may feel that you don’t love her and she is a disappointment.

Major? Some of these seem strange if high stats.

Agree, high stats should be getting off the waitlist at W&M, NYU and Richmond.

Go easy on OP’s role in all this. Kids are also influenced by their peers. I’m just concerned that it seems like a random list of schools without much thought given to size, vibe, academic interests. NYU and Emory and BC, for example, are very different.

I am sorry to read this. I do know of people called off lists in the summer but it is rare. I know two kids who transferred from a college this year and seemed to have an easy time. Both kids had excellent grades in college this year so that helped. I don’t know if they hired someone because I didn’t want to ask. You don’t find out until like May? so that is a bummer. I think there are some schools that accept for spring though so not sure how that works. Maybe you go abroad and also do your applications and show up for spring?
Anonymous
I have not known a kid who hasn’t liked Syracuse although it seems that you are planning on another school. I don’t blame kids for taking all 20 shots to accommodate reaches since it is a numbers game. The real question is did your student ED1 or ED2.
