I'm a 45 year old man who competed D1 in college, spent 3 years as a professional athlete, and worked in finance for more years than I should have. And I haven't heard the kind of casual homophobia you're talking about since middle school in the late 80s. So maybe it is common among tween boys, but you're way off base.

You should have thought out your story more first after conjuring it up. You weren't in middle school in the late 1980s if you are 45.

I was born in 1980, HS class of 1998. I started 5th grade in 1990-91, so well into the 90s.
