The calendar should be one week longer

Most wealthy countries don't take 2 months off of school.

You know how I know you haven't spent any time schools lately? Students are checked out by mid-May. Extending the school year would be absolutely pointless for both students and teachers.

Other countries have different calendars. In France, for example, the summer vacation is shorter (kids are out for July and August), but the school year breaks are longer. I find that so much more rational, since the reason the children here are checked out in May is that they don't have enough rest time during the school year, and it starts to weigh on them. In France, they have two weeks in the fall, two weeks in the winter, two weeks in the spring.

In Japan they don't have a long summer vacation. Their school year starts in April and they get more consistent breaks throughout the year. That way they can power through and get a lot done.

The US school calendar isn't very smart, to be honest.

Japan is hardly a model to emulate. Their society has made childhood and life in general so onerous that no one wants to reproduce and they're in total demographic collapse.

France also has half days every Wednesday. Want to sign up for that?

My kids remember fondly their half day Wednesdays. It's only for the primary years. In secondary school, it's a full week, and in some private schools, they have essay-writing on Saturday mornings. I remember my Saturday mornings: 4 hours of composition. Ugh.

But the vacations break up the school years in a much more humane way than MCPS does.

The problem is ice.

And I do think the way some Asian schools do breaks make it more conducive for education.

MCPS crews are apparently clearing the school properties on Monday! Just got the message from MCPS. I though that in light of the holiday, they would start work only on Tuesday.

So maybe they'll open on time, unless they have a 2 hr delay for the cold.

Re France…. Yes of course!!! I got this as a kid. I have nieces and nephews in school districts that still do this and it’s something I envy.

Personally, I’d prefer that they close on Tuesday. They’ll learn more from me at home anyway.
Absolutely pathetic that my 4th grader who qualified for CES and is in ELC and compacted math has been taught nothing in terms of US geography.

Lol okay, in that case let's end the school year one month earlier and lower teacher salaries accordingly. Sounds like a huge waste to make teachers work an extra month.

Gtfooh

Teacher here. PLEASE give me year-round school. Then my salary can also increase and I won’t have to find summer work.

And while we are comparing US education to other countries: teachers are actually respected in many countries. I’m all for doing whatever it’ll take to get some more respect. Raise certification requirements? Bring it. Require a Masters? Bring that, too. But also give me time like other countries get. I have a teacher friend in Germany who only teaches for 12 hours a week. 2/3rds her time at work is for grading and planning. That sure beats the 2 hours I occasionally get a week if I’m not subbing!

So don’t assume we’ll all be upset with your suggestions.

NP. Isn't year-round school the same number of days distributed differently, so you have more breaks throughout the year and as shorter summer? I don't think teachers would get paid more.

Regardless. The year is less fatiguing, physically and psychologically, on both students and teachers, if the breaks are spread out evenly through the instructional time. I mean, it's a no brainer!

If only MCPS had tried this in a couple of schools and we had a way to know how that went...

Lfmao do you guys even live anywhere near MoCo?

That was different. They added an extra month to the school year.

Agree - sounds like they intend to open on time on Tuesday, which is great. I’m cautiously optimistic.

Then homeschool. The rest of us have jobs.

That’s because MCPS does US geography in 5th.

Delay for the wind chill. Snow won't be the issue. Delay on Wednesday too.

My kid didn’t do geography at all in ES.

Then it will freeze hard due to the polar vortex incoming after the snow.

So while I don't believe Tuesday will be closed, there might be a delay because MCPS crews will not work on MLK Day.

They probably won't have enough time to clear the school's that need to be shoveled by delayed opening times. Tues and Wed should be closed...depending on snow totals. Should give the whole week off as we mourn great US of A and Dept of Education.

Not enough time? They have well over 24 hours.

Relatively little wind is expected. We should be fine to open on-time.
