It's a secret. Literally. The only information out there is dated (based on info prior to 2020) and doesn't address this question. Today FCPS will only say that the review is "holistic" and that scores are not weighted more heavily than other factors. Previously GBRS was used to put a finger on the scale for students with tied test scores. One can only assume that HOPE which succeeded GBRS (biggest difference is that HOPE doesn't require examples of the behaviors and is a bit broader). https://go.boarddocs.com/vsba/fairfax/Board.nsf/files/BPLQKV69B096/$file/FCPS%20final%20report%2005.05.20.pdf (Note: The substance of this document is in the appendices). https://www.fcps.edu/system/files/forms/2023-10/hoperatingscale.pdf |
The majority of kids in AAP were not in-pool. The pool is meant to capture the kids who are most likely inneed of the program at their local school, the top 10%. That top 10% looks different at each of the schools because the population and needs at each of the schools is different. Parent referrals make up the vast majority of kids whose packets are reviewed. The only document that we have that gives an idea about numbers is from 2020 and deals with data pre-2020. If I remember correctly, 2/3 of the in-pool kids are found eligible for AAP and around 1/2 of the kids who are referred. I would guess that those numbers have shifted since the local norms have been introduced with a higher percentage of in-pool kids being accepted, because the norms reflect the school, and a higher percentage of referrals being accepted, because kids with high test scores that had been in-pool before at some schools are no longer in-pool with the local norms. |
I am guessing here but some ND kids benefit from team taught honors classes in MS, where there is a SPED Teacher in the class to help the kids with IEPs and another Teacher leading the class. There are no team taught AAP classes and there are not team taught classes for all Honors classes for every student who needs them. Part of the issue is scheduling, because of electives it is hard to align schedules so that kids who would benefit from team taught classes can be in one for each core class. I think it is even harder to find team taught AP/IB classes in high school. There are kids with ADHD and Autism who are in AAP and take AAP classes in MS. There are kids with ADHD and Autism who will choose the team taught Honors classes. We have friends whose kids take strategies for success, a study skills class, every semester of MS in order to keep on top of AAP/Honors work loads. IEP services are harder to give in MS because of kids shifting classes and not wanting to pull kids from core classes for services. |
For some reason I thought this information had been released at some point. I do remember a substantial portion (maybe 1/3) of in-pool kids don't get in. |
I remember reading on here that it was around 20% a few years ago. It was more a criticism of how AAP is not a gifted program and there is no way 20% is gifted compared to MCPS with 2%, which is truly gifted. |
Why were we given 12/15 as the deadline for the parent referral if the in-pool email says we have until Jan 6, 2025. This was from in pool email:
("Parents may submit up to two optional work samples. Please share with your AART at your local school by January 6, 2025." ) |
If you hadn't parent referred and already sent in samples, you would have an opportunity to send in work samples now. Not sure if you can respond with more samples now. What a process... |
Because anyone not in pool can't send anything in at this point. If you didn't end up in pool your only shot at referral was the 15th. |
12/17 Received universal screener email
12/18 Cogat scores not available on parentvue. The universal screener may have just been based on DD NNAT score which was over 140. |
All FCPS documentation indicates that the universal screener is based on BOTH the NNAT and the COGAT. The AAP central office has the COGAT scores - they just haven't released them on ParentVue yet. |
This. This lets parents who weren't paying attention try and help build up the packet if they just now realized their kid was smart or that this program existed - which happens more often than you think. |
RECEIVED IN POOL EMAIL. did not check until I saw this thread. thanks. but where is cogat score now?
|
Since we submitted the parent referral packet already, do we need to do anything after receiving the in-pool email? |
No, unless you want to swap out your work samples for something better. If so you could probably check with your AART if that's allowed at this point. |
I am hopeful we will see cogat scores today in the weekly folder. |
