Is your child's NNAT score in the 90%+ ? Is your child intellectually curious? Is your child able to focus on certain thing he/she interested in for a long time? Can you have an intelligent conversation with your child?
You forgot “is your child neurotypical?” Trust me, your child can be all of those other things but low support needs autistic and you won’t get a placement.
This just isn't true. My kid's center class has multiple students with ADHD and/or Autism - it's over 1/4 of the class.
Hooray for you, but my experience is that if an ND kid gets into AAP their needs won't be met. It's either or. Wait until secondary if you don't believe me.
So where should they belong to? Do you think they should belong to Special education group?
I am guessing here but some ND kids benefit from team taught honors classes in MS, where there is a SPED Teacher in the class to help the kids with IEPs and another Teacher leading the class. There are no team taught AAP classes and there are not team taught classes for all Honors classes for every student who needs them. Part of the issue is scheduling, because of electives it is hard to align schedules so that kids who would benefit from team taught classes can be in one for each core class. I think it is even harder to find team taught AP/IB classes in high school. There are kids with ADHD and Autism who are in AAP and take AAP classes in MS. There are kids with ADHD and Autism who will choose the team taught Honors classes. We have friends whose kids take strategies for success, a study skills class, every semester of MS in order to keep on top of AAP/Honors work loads. IEP services are harder to give in MS because of kids shifting classes and not wanting to pull kids from core classes for services.
