My child took this test back in October. I believe it was on the computer so wouldn’t the results be instant? |
Raw scores need to be converted to scaled scores. AARTs do have instant access to raw scores. Final results are released just before December 15th (which is the deadline for the full time AAP parental referral submission |
You’re kidding, right? |
How does a parent know if they even want to apply without the score though? |
If it's not clear your kid needs AAP without the CogAt score they probably don't need AAP. If you don't want to do the work for the packet you can just roll the dice on being in pool |
Even if you're in pool, doing the packet is very helpful. It allows you to present your case that your child requires advanced academics. Otherwise you don't get to make that case and rely on the teacher and AART making it for you. |
I completely agree with you. My point was simply that the CogAt shouldn't be the deciding factor for someone. If they're that disinclined to put in the effort that can choose not to. |
Is your child's NNAT score in the 90%+ ? Is your child intellectually curious? Is your child able to focus on certain thing he/she interested in for a long time? Can you have an intelligent conversation with your child? Additionally, many parents WANT to apply even without knowing all the above. They just WANT their child in AAP. It's hard to answer how does a parent know they want to do anything. |
They haven't taken the NNAT yet (new to school) |
The real answer is - if you think there's any chance that you'll be looking back at the beginning of third thinking "I wish I'd applied," then do the work and do it. Yes you can apply again later, but you might as well do it now. Worse the committee says is no and you've wasted several hours putting the parent part of the packet together. |
Being in that top 10% is not easy based on the size of the 2nd grade class so I would parent refer now! |
I thought it was Jan 24, 2025 per the website? I am just beginning to read up as we just recently decided not to continue with private next year so scrambling to put it all together. Seems I missed today's deadline for the submission. Am I talking of something entirely different? I just posted so trying to learn. |
Can you please explain what being in the pool means? Private parent learning. I thought the only way to get into an AAP program is to go to school that offers and complete the AAP process. Asking for FCPS middle school. |
There's different deadlines depending where you are at... for private/homeschool students the Fall deadline was today (to join AAP in the coming Spring semester or beyond). There's another deadline Jan 24th which is good enough if you're looking to join the program in the Fall of 2025 or beyond. For current FCPS students who joined FCPS this calendar year, the deadline was Oct 15 (to join in the spring). For longer-tenured FCPS students the deadline is Dec 15 (referrals here are optional but not necessary if the student was already in-pool). |
Most of the info is here: https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/advanced-academic-programs In-pool = universal screener = kid scored well enough that they are basically going to submit a referral packet on your student's behalf. You can choose to supplement with your own referral, or just let the school handle it. This only applies to students who have been in FCPS since sometime prior to Jan 1 2024. The other cases are also detailed in the linked page. |
