I have a SIL but I don't have a brother. I'll let you noodle on that riddle for awhile until you get it.

No a huge riddle, to be honest. What a stupid snappy comment.

In response to the PP who asked why OP wasn't texting her brother? Give me a break.

That’s not a problem with most and there are legitimate business reasons why my phone needs to alert me to things out of the social grace timeframes.

You can also hide alerts for any text conversation. I do this for chains with groups of more than two people because they can blow up and I don't want my phone vibrating 47 times while I'm doing something else.

PPs saying learn to silence your phones are clueless about real life with teens and elderly parents. Calls and texts can come from any number in an emergency. Enjoy your years of having the luxury to silence your phones or choose phone numbers that can break through. That is not real life with teens and elderly parents. Or maybe you don’t care if you are reachable in an emergency. I which case, be my guest and silence your phones.

Why? Plenty of people have relationships with their in-laws.

Also, what should OP do if it's SIL and BIL (I'm sure you figured out how that could work)? Does her husband have to do it?

Think about people with teens who might be out late at night, want to go to sleep but still hear their phones in case of emergency. Or an elderly parent who may need to contact them in an emergency. These are the reasons I don't completely silence my phone. So I agree, do not text people in off hours. It's no differen than calling them, which you wouldn't do.

There are settings that take care of all of this

There area settings that take care of op not sending unimportant text at inappropriate times.

Even worse.

Let your H communicate with his family.

Like SIL who will learn to use the block feature.

Wait. People get audio signals of their texts? Why on earth?

DP but when it comes to asking my DH's sister and family about get togethers, my DH is the one who invites them. He is the contact with his family and I am the contact for mine. We all get along together. Event planning is not entirely on me, we do it together.

I generally do not text before 8 or after 10. Unless it's my DS who is a night owl. But he also uses do not disturb when he doesn't want to get texts.

Know your audience.

As for me, I put my phone down at night, no sounds on, so I don't see or hear any notifications when I'm in bed. I don't want to be woken so I make sure I'm not.

My feeling is if you don't want alerts going off, then you silence your phone or set up Do Not Disturb. It's not like I was banging on her door. She has always been snotty so this is par for the course but I also sent it to others

Just gut checking myself here- there aren't time limits for texting, right?

Isn't it up to the receipient to control their own quiet time?

That text could have waited

1. She doesn't like you.
2. It's too early.

You're in the wrong. Period.
