If you show up at a party, three foods you are excited to see

Everything in this thread is a wonderful suggestion, but I really love to see chips and a Helluva good dip at a gathering...because this is the only time I allow myself to have these foods. I don't buy them ever so as low key lame as it sounds, good chips and a dip at a party are so my jam.

Me too! Never buy it but happy to eat it at parties!

Other things I enjoy:

Home made salsa (spicy), guacamole, and spinach artichoke dip with chips, or a few different flavors of hummus with pita or naan dippers

Samosas and pakoras

Summer rolls (not fried)

Good desserts - Panna cotta, boozy trifle, tiramisu, tres leches, etc. Or a really good chocolate chip cookie, straight out of the oven. Skip the cloyingly sweet, American buttercream based cakes. And for the love of god, don’t serve oatmeal raisin cookies at a gathering. The disappointment one feels when they bite into a cookie thinking chocolate and instead encounter raisins….

You remind me of my DD. One time we got carry out from a restaurant and picked out cookies for dessert. I actually wanted oatmeal raisin but she had selected chocolate chip. She ate her dessert immediately after supper, while I waited until the kids were in bed so I could relax while I enjoyed my treat. When I finally went to retrieve my cookie, it was nowhere to be found, all that remained was a chocolate chip cookie. When I asked DD about it the next day, she said she thought her chocolate chip cookie had tasted funny.

Smoked salmon - capers, onions, tomato
Shrimp
cheese board with nuts and grapes
I also really like herring, like the one from IKEA, with dark bread

shrimp cocktail
caviar
fresh oysters (if I know the people know what they're doing).

at other times:
some kind of cheese/cream dip for nachos chips
onion dip/chips
any salty/fatty/fried things

(this latter grouping is for indulgences I'd devour if I was left to my own devices and so never buy/make for ourselves, and then can consume at a party where others will watch and judge if I over-indulge).

Clearly haven't thought about this AT ALL

I'm the poster below you (18:28) and you're my spirit animal. Literally the other things I almost wrote. We should form a supper club!

This is the best DCUM topic I've read in years. And you're all making me hungry.

I second samosas.

I'm not fussy, but I just want food placed where it's easy to get to - not everything crowded on a small, badly placed table. Even better - hire a couple of kids to pass foods so we can stake out spots and chat and relax.

Fresh vegetables and hummus
Salads

Things that specific people make (like signature dishes they often serve at home or bring to a party):
Moroccan style minted carrots
Lentil salad with feta, herbs, and onion
Quinoa amazing salad with I don't know what but my friend makes it and it's delish
This veggie minestrone stew another friend makes with homemade bread right out of the oven and kerrygold butter
Kale-Basil pesto pasta
Lemon cake

Things anyone can make but I love
Watermelon at a summer outdoors party
Hot gooey box mix brownies
Warm chocolate chip cookie

Potato tikis with cholley
Fish fry
Prawn masala
Artichoke dip and crusty breads
Crab dip
Mozarella skewers
Vegetarian quesadillas
Blooming onions with zesty sauce

Who makes a bloomin' onion at home? I don't see how it could be made well at home, unless you have a deep fryer.

Ask your caterer to make it. Part of having a party and serving great fried foods like poori, pakoras, vadas, samosas, spinach chaat, masala prawns is that your caterer can make it fresh on site and can serve to the guests

You guys don't go to good parties, do you?

Anything that is homemade and has fresh ingredients:

Homemade naan bread with hummus
Roasted vegetable platter
Lentil salad
Stuffed mushroom caps
Any green salads with homemade dressings (no fruit in the salad please!)
Fresh sliced fruit

It is super disappointing to be invited somewhere to be served bags chips, jarred salsa/guac, and Costco food

I would love this party!

I haven’t made this but I want to make it for something like the Super Bowl: a savory garlic monkey bread with a little mozzarella in the center of each biscuit. Like cheesy garlic pull-apart bread.
