WI is for people who are from - Wisconsin. Most OOS don't want frigid weather. UM? Maybe worth it for a public. TX? Meh. |
So funny.. some kids would be super thrilled to get into UMD. I'm looking at the stats on some of the rejections to UMD on this site, and omg, shocking how someone with pretty high stats are being rejected at UMD. I guess ymmv |
Thanks- was Wisconsin a top choice? what are her stats? |
1580 SAT (800 math) 4.0 uwgpa/4.92 wgpa at a magnet 58 credits going in passed UMD MVC exam |
I love Posts like this. Where the kid goes to the 2nd choice school and winds up loving it. My kid got into UMD but had some bizarre vision of not being able to escape high school. Unfortunately, turned it down. I was very disappointed. Went to one of the other choices that she was not excited about and loves it now. We said she could try to transfer to one of the schools she didn’t get into initially and she said “ no”. I like where I am! We just want our kids to settle in and be happy. Good luck. |
we get it. but quote says unlike to get into WI and that's BS. Agree MI is a longer shot. |
| She will get in. |
No one cares about your opinion. Stay on topic or skip the thread. |
Not this year apparently and kids with great stats and classes. Maybe it was winning national football championship and it upped the applications. Most everyone we know threw in an EA there and also Wisco and saw similar results there as well. |
Have him send in a letter WI of continued interest |
Bless your heart ❤️ |
I am an in-state parent whose kid just got accepted to U of M yesterday. My kid was told by students already matriculated not to give up if deferred and to grind it all the way to the Wait List. I have looked at all the statistics about deferrals and concluded from the fact pattern that the growth in deferrals has to be tied to the increased uncertainty about yield. "Will you come, out-of-stater, if accepted?" Therefore, as the link suggests, the student definitely should submit some compelling points in the LOCI and definitely get the counselor to call or e-mail the regional admissions officer. That should help. Michigan just IS a safety school for many Metro NYC and DMV kids...it's obvious. And smart kids who can pull off tons of apps are smart enough to customize each app in a way that doesn't reveal that. So probably on the back end there's statistical modeling working against many sincere people. I do not think people need to use an external paid counseling service. Have the student reflect on what could have been better about their app and make a point or two about it in the LOCI. Is there any way they could get some more "demonstrated interest" logged in the CRM system? Like attend a registered online webinar from the college within the University? I don't know if the student's interest measure is cut off at application date but maybe it's not. I think it's good to love the school that loves you BUT I've been impressed by determined people I've met who managed to overcome "No"s in their life. And a deferral at Michigan is not even a "No" yet. I had a U of M MBA classmate who shifted her whole adult life (cross-country move, etc.) to come off the waitlist for U of M in July. Tough, committed, decisive...she should have been admitted directly. But we arrived at the same point in the end. Good luck to you and your children. And do keep in mind that a lot of these schools are similar except for facilities and geography. The basic education provided is going to be roughly comparable. |
Not sure what you are talking about, nearly everyone reporting MI results here and on college confidential was deferred. |

“Michigan just IS a safety school for many Metro NYC and DMV kids...it's obvious.”
I’m missing the point of the sentence above by PP. Can you please clarify it for me. |
