I'm so sad for my kid

His high school counselor was pushing him to ED a tougher school but he has always wanted Michigan. It's just so hard to see kids who have worked for something not get it. It's ok to be sad for a couple of days (I think it hasn't hit him yet - he's still stunned despite me trying ot prepare him) and then I agree we pull it together and it's onward to the next round. The kicker is, my ds' girlfriend got in, she didn't submit test scores and she doesn't even really want to go. It was a rough night here.

Many deferrals turn into acceptances at Michigan. I’m glad he didn’t ED to a tougher school.

^^^Write an amazing letter of continued interest and also have your private school college counselor reach out to the regional representative and reiterate your son’s strong interest in attending. Remember how many apps Michigan gets (like 88k last year and probably up this year heightened by the success in football) for 7K slots, only 1/2 of which are for OOS. Don’t give up as many others will and show them the love! Report back in March/April and let us know how it goes!

Do others really give up? Even if you don't write a LOCI, you're still in the running and may get in.
Does anyone know the rates of getting in after being deferred to both MI or WI?

Not everyone will write the letter-those who have been accepted elsewhere that they prefer.

This article states that they don’t release the numbers of deferrals, etc

What's wrong with UMD? It's a good school. OP is feeling miserable for no reason.

Hmm I don't think this is correct? I have not heard that

I hear great things about UMD. Also that friends' kids from other schools (U of Richmond esp) are up visiting their UMD friends very very frequently - College Park is considered more fun!
It's a great education. All good

He doesn't want to go there. Isn't remotely excited. Likes UGA so it will be fine. Just disappointed about wisco. Don't care about Michigan.

I hear ya. Kid has gotten a bunch of deferrals and couple of rejections and it smarts. Ironically last night she got rejected from one, deferred at another but into Wisconsin and is thrilled to have a great option…though wouldn’t say it was her first choice.

However I have heard that A LOT of the Wisconsin deferrals turn into acceptances so push hard on that LOCI, send the grades, and if counselor pushing is an option, do that. I have faith it will work out for you and you should make sure that your kid knows you think it’s going to work out for them too.

PS GA is a great option that others are dying for! This process is so weird lol

I went to UMD. Loved it. Son would choose UGA over it. It's more that wisconsin was perfect fit.

someone who could be happy and successful at any one of these colleges could be happy and successful at any of them (unless they hate winter). It’s a huge mistake to buy into the idea of a collegiate ideal.

No school is perfect. I grew up in Madison and did grad school in Athens. It is totally possible to love both towns with your whole heart, and still to see that both schools have plenty of flaws.

Rejection always hurts. Time to process that and learn to love the one you’re with. If it were me I’d get offline, go for a run, and pull myself together so I could model that for DS.

This. Life is so long. Teach your kid perspective and grit, once he sulks for a few days. If this is the worst thing that ever happens to him, it’s a pretty good life.
