Over 50 Cars Broken Into in Woodley Park

It’s property crime. There is no interest in doing anything about property crime in DC. Even if an arrest was made, it would have to be prosecuted. USAO doesn’t prosecute real crimes, or OAG will offer hugs and services. This is just the cost of living here.

The media might be interested in the footage.

Someone should put it up there.

bored teenagers?

Maret students?

Nah.

It was 1 guy on an electric scooter. Just a lot of property damage for no real reason. Was not rifling cars. Just smashing glass.

Sounds like a road design issue.

If it’s a rented electric scooter, can’t we trace who was using it at 2 am on that street?

Chances are it's not legally rented, there are ways to get around that, stolen card, etc.

Even still, that is a useful data point for detectives.

The homicide closure rate is under 50%, this will only be a priority if there is media attention or if a big donor pressures the mayor. Property crime - you are on your own in DC. If you can't afford plenty of replacement window glass, time to move out of DC. Remember cars have been stolen, had ignitions torn apart or had wheels stolen even in apartment building or hotel garages in DC. It's a city based on a lot of street parking. In the video footage I've seen they were not even ransacking the cars.

Yawn.

Until it's your car! But hey it's only rich people, right? Tax base is going to flee DC.

It seems to me that the police aren't even trying. I understand that the USAO isn't prosecuting. I understand that the Council has passed some bad laws. I understand that the local ANC is a joke. But it appears that the police are also not making any effort. The system is rotten from the head to the tail.

Why should the police risk harm to themselves (these are brazen criminals after all) to arrest people that they 100% know will not be prosecuted anyway?

At a recent meeting in CP, the police chief said property crime was up 50% in DC. With another 50 property crimes in one day, I'm guessing it's now up 200% or more.

The Feds are putting more resources into DC, which should help, and they are beginning to prosecute property crimes, but we need to absolutely keep the pressure on. The cops should be able to find the window breaker.

Ok, let’s continue the fantasy.

Cops find him. Arrest him. USAO *actually* prosecutes, there’s no plea deal (there’s always a plea deal) and a DC jury *actually* convicts (in a year or so).

Then what? What do you think happens?

Anyone who lives in Woodley Park needs to be at Open City at 9am on February 1 to tell Frumin to find the courage to vote yes on the next crime bill. He is predictably waffling.

Because that is their job. If they won't put in any basic effort then why even have them?

This one isn't even a dangerous situation. Are they going to get a paper cut filling out the paperwork? There's video of a specific time and place along with a GPS tracked scooter. The combined damage is in the thousands. At the very least they should be interested in figuring out the puzzle.

Not doing anything about something this brazen, basic and public completely shatters any illusion that the police will do anything about anything.

It's only going to go up even further now that there is a very public example of the unwillingness of the police to do anything. That's what has happened with traffic enforcement (and yes I do understand that that particular problem is the Council's fault).

Ah yes, the defunders change their tune when crime happens in their neighborhood.

STFU with your dumb ass divisive partisan bs. It's not my neighborhood and I think defunding is stupid. However, if the police aren't going to do anything about anything then there is zero point in having them around. If we have to protect ourselves from everything then we need to know.

There were a staggering number of BLM signs in WP three years ago. The chickens have come home to roost.
