Huge mass shooting incident in Lewiston, ME

Sandy Hook didn’t change anything, nothing will. I gave up then. I had no connection to the families except that I was a parent too and I was traumatized. Americans suck.

School shootings didn’t start with Sandy Hook. Change should have happened after the horrors of Columbine, but those victims are rarely mentioned. That should have been the last school shooting.

Please. People only started to care about this crap when it started happening out side urban areas. That is the milestone that the tragic event at Columbine represents.

This is so sad. I know it's equally sad that so many have died, but this man is not right in the head and the Army failed him (as it has failed so many mentally ill veterans). Mental health is not actually being addressed in this country.

The language of mental health + therapy is just being appropriated by narcissistic frauds like Jada Pinkett Smith.

We're not actually investing the public funds where they need to be invested. If this man had gotten the help he needed, if he had gotten compassion instead of judgment, if people had not dismissed his needs, nobody would have been in danger today.

My joking sympathies to all of the other Robert Cards whose lives are going to be very annoying briefly.

My real sympathies to the families of the deceased and injured. I’m sorry that the GOP loves its gun money more than it appreciates a safe healthy populace.

And more sympathies to thousands of people who are tonight remembering their mass shooting experiences and wondering where their loved ones would be now. May PTSD flares be brief and may good memories comfort them.

Stop it. This is not the time to be talking about gun control, not when people are so emotional.

SCOTUS has clarified that gun ownership is an inalienable right and that using your gun is protected free speech. Democrats always scream for gun control after events like these because they know it’s REPUBLICANS, namely MAGA, who own the vast majority of guns and ammo in America. Asking President Trump and the GOP to support gun control is really asking them to unilaterally disarm. It makes no sense to hand the Democrats such a victory, when gun-aided speech is literally and figuratively MAGA’s Trump card for 2024.

If having an AR-15 is an inalienable right, then why stop there? I really want my own grenade launcher and c-ram anti missile launcher. My constitutional rights are being infringed because I’m not able to express myself, much less open carry a grenade launcher. Oh, you say there’s no reason for me to have a sweet over the shoulder anti-tank missile gun? Well, I say bollocks. Why not? If the ME shooter can have an AR-15, I see no reason I can’t have the latest and greatest anti tank missile gun. I mean, they probably would probably kill the same number of people in the same amount of time, if that’s what you are worried about. Jeez.

Can I get a TOW missile mounted on my Subaru for the next time some jackass cuts me off?

Yes, that sounds like a great idea! And let’s bring back armor piercing rounds, while we’re at it. Why ever were those made illegal? If we really believe that human lives are but a small price to pay for our right to have lethal weapons, then by god, let’s not just talk the talk, let’s walk the walk. Lobby your elected officials to make armor piercing rounds, mortars, ied’s, and bazookas at your local cabela’s. Personal nuclear weapons seem like a reach right now, but that’s the goal, everyone.

DP - obviously, but PP was saying that was when he or she gave up hoping for sensible gun controls. Me too. When such young kids were massacred in Sandy Hook ES, I was briefly confident that we would finally get some decent gun safety legislation and enforcement -/ instead NRA doubled down with their guns don’t kill people nonsense, many people were unbelievably cruel to the parents and denied the massacre of the lambs even took place, and mass gun violence has become even more common place.

So confused how Jada Pinkett Smith got dragged into this…

I think she was just making a point about how we pay lip service to mental health and it looks like we're talking about it, but we're not. Probably because that too is all over the news right now.

Massive fail on mental health...as so many of these mass cases seem to be. When will we see the thread here?

It’s not guns that kill people, it’s people with mental health issues that kill people.

When is this madness going to stop!!!

We should disband the military. Too many of these guys become crazy.

Or maybe we should have an all female army. You don’t hear about too many female mass shooters.

It seems to be never the time to talk about gun control.

Why would gun control ever happen? You can shoot up a classroom full of 8 year olds at Sandy Hook and nothing changes. This is just a regular weekday event here. I'm surprised it is national news at this point. Routine American life.

6 year olds. They would be high school seniors this year.

NP and what would you have mental professionals do? Maybe two weeks was the longest he could stay there. Maybe he wanted to leave. It is very difficult to do an involuntary hold, certainly not for longer than two weeks. What if he was prescribed meds and didn’t take them? I have a problem with always blaming mental health professionals (of which I am not one). They only have so much they can control within the law.

Wasn’t a recent Maine governor a MAGA nut?

Yes, LePage. Sadly, I know the person who ran his campaign.

It should have been. It shouldn't have to take a team of psychotherapists to convince someone not to shoot up a bunch of innocent people.

All you can do now is try not to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I’m a teacher in Maine and our schools are closed, even an hour and a half away. It’s a small state, population wise, and this will reverberate all over. We have so many former students who attend Bates and live near the area. Sad and scared. Really hope they catch this guy soon.
