Huge mass shooting incident in Lewiston, ME

Maybe I’m crazy but maybe the problem is relatively easy access to AR-15…

Hugs. Hoping the same. My niece is home from school today.

Reportedly lost his job, threatened to blow up a military base, has been hearing voices, spent two weeks in a mental health facility...

And yet Republicans think he should still have guns.

this country is sick, watch gun sales skyrocket as a result.

Americans in general are demented and insane and getting more so. I would say try to leave while you still can.

americans buy on average 30 million firearms a year, 475 million has been sold in the last 20 years.

https://www.fbi.gov/file-repository/nics_firearm_checks_-_month_year.pdf/view

firearms sales have tripled from 10 million a year in 1999 to close to 30 million a year today.

In recent years, american buy somewhere around ~20-22 million handguns and 8-10 million long guns rifles/shoguns every single year. by comparison, all US police, federal law enforcement and military procures under 100,000 long guns a year. The world's military/police forces on a good year procures ~300-400k long guns a year. The american civilian procures more long guns than the entire police/military of the planet by somewhere close to 15-20 to 1.

CIA estimates back in the 90s was that the soviet old coldwar stockpile of small arms during the coldwar was about 50-75 million, maybe with 2/3 still functional. American in the last 20 years have stockpilled somewhere close to 60-80 million long guns. american civilian's stockpile of deadly weapons already dwarfs the soviet stockpiles meant to fight WW3,

Face it. we are never getting rid of "assault weapons", any gun control measures will be half assed and once the shooting gets out of the headlines, calls for "reform" will cool and demented Americans will keep stockpiling their arsenals and the mass shootings will continue.

Leave this insane place while you still can.

My joking sympathies to all of the other Robert Cards whose lives are going to be very annoying briefly.

My real sympathies to the families of the deceased and injured. I’m sorry that the GOP loves its gun money more than it appreciates a safe healthy populace.

And more sympathies to thousands of people who are tonight remembering their mass shooting experiences and wondering where their loved ones would be now. May PTSD flares be brief and may good memories comfort them.

Stop it. This is not the time to be talking about gun control, not when people are so emotional.

SCOTUS has clarified that gun ownership is an inalienable right and that using your gun is protected free speech. Democrats always scream for gun control after events like these because they know it’s REPUBLICANS, namely MAGA, who own the vast majority of guns and ammo in America. Asking President Trump and the GOP to support gun control is really asking them to unilaterally disarm. It makes no sense to hand the Democrats such a victory, when gun-aided speech is literally and figuratively MAGA’s Trump card for 2024.

Sorry that we have to talk about gun control when there is a mass shooting because there is always a mass shooting in this country.

For decades the SCOTUS interpreted the second amendment differently. So the current reading is not necessarily correct.

I would vote to amend the constitution if necessary, to stop this insanity.

Your complaint is with the state of Maine which has relaxed gun control because it is a hunting state … not with scotus or republicans.

Wrong . This cannot be righted in a piecemeal fashion.

Exactly.

One should be required to submit to an extensive psychological screening as part of the process for buying a gun or having a gun transferred to you.

And, we need mandatory universal background checks to include that psychological screening, along with a searchable database to track every gun transfer, and to be able to periodically audit gun ownership. If a guy buys 10 9mm pistols in a year, a year from now he had better have every single one of them still in his possession. But if he doesn't, and they are recovered from a gang shootout, and he didn't report them missing or stolen, he should go to jail as an accomplice. And likewise, if he repeatedly "loses" guns or has them "stolen" on a recurring basis, his right to own a gun should be immediately revoked - because at best he is an irresponsible gun owner incapable of securing his guns, and at worst, is a straw buyer reselling to people who should not have them.

+1

We need more gun control laws similar to Switzerland.

i admire your naivete and your optimism, but i have seen this play out over and over again. What will happen is in the 3-4 weeks after the tragedy, there will be a push for common sense gun control, it will get watered down, and in 2 months nobody will be trying to do anything about it. Some sane states may pass an AWB, but those will get overturned by SCOTUS in 6-9 months. What will happen however is the insane right will purchase record amounts of guns during that meantime, its like black friday to those people every time a mass shooting happens.

This is ABSOLUTELY an insane country we are living in and i can wait to get out of it soon enough.

Maybe the government should start secretly installing tracking devices in AR15s to make it a lot easier to find these guys??

Two questions.....
1. Why was he released from the facility? Clearly, he is not well.
2. Given that he had threatened to shoot up the military base, why was he permitted to own a gun - any gun?

The document, circulated to law enforcement officials, said Card had been committed to a mental health facility for two weeks in the summer of 2023. It did not provide details about his treatment or condition but said Card had reported "hearing voices and threats to shoot up" the military base. A telephone number listed for Card in public records was not in service.

In Maine as well (about hour from Lewiston) and our schools also closed. Hope you stay safe. I'm glad they are keeping kids/staff home today while this unfolds. Hugs.

It seems to be never the time to talk about gun control.

Why would gun control ever happen? You can shoot up a classroom full of 8 year olds at Sandy Hook and nothing changes. This is just a regular weekday event here. I'm surprised it is national news at this point. Routine American life.

STOP electing Republicans.

It is really that easy.

I want everyone to stop electing Republicans too but it’s never going to be that easy, because there are tens of millions of assault rifles in circulation now and guys like this are never going to give them up without murdering the LEOs tasked to come get them.

Yes, there are going to be buybacks and other challenges but it’s time to start doing hard things before this country turns into more of a third world nightmare.
