Uh, well, that is already what DC does. Which is the problem. We have the same teenagers getting arrested over and over and over and over and over. Eventually they kill someone, and people are surprised? That 15 year old girl who killed another girl in a carjacking had previously been arrested seven times for carjacking. It seems clear at this point that the answer is not to keep doing what we're doing and pretend it's working. |
That child was released back to her family. You're arguing for better prosecution, while JLG was referring to the pre - trial process, and she is not wrong. https://wtop.com/dc/2023/11/no-soap-little-time-for-education-dcs-trayon-white-calls-for-changes-after-visit-to-youth-detention-center/ |
We just want someone who takes crime seriously, for a change. |
I truly don't know how to continue a discussion with a PP like this. I believe JLG is taking crime seriously. I think that she has a vision that some people disagree with. When you reduce discussion to one sentence talking points like taking crime seriously, I don't really know what you mean. |
And by "'some people" you mean "people who aren't criminals" |
But preferably someone that doesn't want to cut off our transportation access. Her role on the ANC, not knowing her personal opinions, has me very troubled. The Ward 4 members on it have seemingly completely sold out their neighborhoods on the proposed Rock Creek and Connecticut Ave changes. |
I agree with her philosophy, and I am not a criminal. Try not to generalize please, as it makes it harder to move to substantive understandings. |
New PP, but it is impossible to see any evidence of her having any thoughts on crime other than “how can we make it easier for criminals to avoid punishment.” |
It's easy to generalize about Janeese Lewis George's positions on crime. If it holds criminals accountable in any way whatsoever, she is opposed. And if that legislation was proposed by Bowser and/or (gasp!) the police department, then she is adamantly opposed to it. |
From her CM site: "As a former Assistant Attorney General who saw the impact of community interventions, Councilmember Lewis George is calling for a significant increase in funding for violence prevention programs and services that reduce crime by improving the health, education, and economic opportunity for residents. She is working to strengthen coordination with federal and state agencies to address gun trafficking into the District and tighten restrictions on untraceable “ghost guns.” She is advocating for increased investments in victim services programs and has co-introduced legislation to expand supports for victims of crime. She supports providing services for our returning justice-involved residents to prevent recidivism and accelerate decarceration. And she has called for an increase in staffing in the Office of Human Rights to better address discrimination and the profound ways it impacts our residents’ security and wellbeing." I think that her platform is comprehensive and is done a disservice by the people on this thread. It feels like other posters are just repeating talking points they've seen from people on Twitter, without any substance behind their comments. This is why I'm not that concerned about a race between her and Ms. Gore. If you can show me where she is opposed to hold criminals accountable, I'm open to hearing it. |
It is unbelievable that anyone can be impressed by those platitudes that work overtime to obscure what they actually mean in practice. |
No. DC does not do that apparently. Month ago a group or very young kids beat up a homeowner who had put out for them something they could play ball with in the alley. After 9 pm he told them his toddler needed to sleep and they had to wrap it up and they just attacked him and seriously injured him, they had been around since 6pm with no supervision, no dinner, no thing just young tweens on their own. The oldest was identified and after the arrest was released to his family. A young kid who violently beat up a man who had just set up something for them to play, only because after 3 hours snd in the dark asked them to wrap it up due to being night time, clearly grew up in a very f-up family if he even had one. Fact that he was roaming around in April mid week until past 9pm suggests family is the last place he should have been release to. And this seems to be what happens. Kids are released to their families and sometimes the families are not able to deal with them or are actually why the kids behave like this |
Janeese Lewis George has spent her entire time in office fighting efforts to crack down on crime. She should just own it. She's not going to convince anyone now, now that she has a credible challenger, that she suddenly actually cares about crime. |
I think I'm good concluding my part in this discussion, as the posters here are ignorant to the fact that people do believe she is doing good. The election is def going to be surprising for some of us! Maybe even me! |
We know you believe she has been going good. What do you consider her best accomplishment to help with DC’s skyrocketing crime rate? |
