There it is, folks. Please tell us how Janeese's actions on crime have been so "insightful."

She sends detailed newsletters with specifics of the issues and what she's doing about it. Have you actually read those? DC, especially Ward 4 crime / safety is discussed in a lot of those (maybe all?).

She's come to fairly contentious community meetings and given clear answers on what she can do and what she won't do. And she brings in MPD, USAO, and others as effectively as I think she can.

But if you want to spout slogans and vote based off "public safety and crime tops my list of priorities" without any meat behind it then you've made up your mind based on emotion not logic.

Janeese *cried* when Bowser said 17 year olds arrested for murder should be detained. She said jail would “traumatize” them. Next! I will vote for whoever is most likely to defeat this crazy person

That is crazy. I can’t believe she said that. Her and Bowser seem on opposite sides.

Maybe she didn't? It seems like what a conservative would like to think she said.

It was in the Washington Post.

Would you mind sharing that, so we could see it in its appropriate context?

"The D.C. mayor’s legislative proposal that would impose new penalties for gun crimes and make it easier to detain some youths awaiting trial encountered fierce resistance at a council hearing Tuesday, even as the city’s top federal prosecutor and a host of residents said the bill would help reduce violent crime in the nation’s capital.

D.C. Council member Janeese Lewis George (D-Ward 4) said the proposed legislation would be “incredibly traumatizing” to children."

Thanks for sharing. I do agree with her statement. I would love our Council and Mayor's office to be seeking alternative placements other than prison for children who are awaiting trial. I agree that for many of these kids, going back to their house is not the best option.

Uh, well, that is already what DC does. Which is the problem. We have the same teenagers getting arrested over and over and over and over and over. Eventually they kill someone, and people are surprised? That 15 year old girl who killed another girl in a carjacking had previously been arrested seven times for carjacking. It seems clear at this point that the answer is not to keep doing what we're doing and pretend it's working.

That child was released back to her family. You're arguing for better prosecution, while JLG was referring to the pre - trial process, and she is not wrong.

I’m so excited about my run and NO - I was not encouraged to run by anyone other than my many neighbors in Hawthorne and Brightwood and a few in Riggs LaSalle! I promise you they are real people, everyday neighbors!

I do not want to stop your open discussions about this race or me, but I do want you to have access to me and get to know me first hand. I have quite the story including raising my son here - he was born at 24 weeks and only 1.5lbs. We went through tough, tough times. If you saw my At Large race you saw him with me every step of the way. He’s now a second year college student at LaSalle in Philly! It can be done!

And yes, I have an extensive LEO career. I started right here in DC as a juvenile, Bilingual Probation Officer. I was one of DC’s first bilingual (Spanish) POs in juvenile supervision. I worked in this role for 5yrs. I transitioned to US Customs as a Special Agent in San Juan, PR and then to the IG’s Office, HUD where I retired as a senior manager. I’ve done it all in this arena, white collar and violent crime, and delivery of services to juvenile offenders. I was a law enforcement instructor and National Use of Force Coordinator.

I retired during COVID to spend time with my son - finally! I immediately jumped into community service and ran for ANC. I’m serving my second term in 3/4G where I am currently Chair. This role has brought me back to my community service roots and even though I’m in 3/4G, I get calls from all across the Ward. And I answer!

Please continue with your discussions! I won’t lurk. I wanted to share some of my background and let you all know how to contact me directly if you every have questions about my campaign or need to verify information. I have the same number and email I used in the AL race, 202- 697-7056, info@gorefordc and my website is GorforDC.com. I certainly have a lot of ideas and we will be releasing our platform soon, but job #1 is serving constituents. That must be front and center.

Thanks!

Lisa R. Gore,
Candidate, Ward 4 Council

We just want someone who takes crime seriously, for a change.

I truly don't know how to continue a discussion with a PP like this. I believe JLG is taking crime seriously. I think that she has a vision that some people disagree with. When you reduce discussion to one sentence talking points like taking crime seriously, I don't really know what you mean.

But preferably someone that doesn't want to cut off our transportation access. Her role on the ANC, not knowing her personal opinions, has me very troubled. The Ward 4 members on it have seemingly completely sold out their neighborhoods on the proposed Rock Creek and Connecticut Ave changes.

I agree with her philosophy, and I am not a criminal. Try not to generalize please, as it makes it harder to move to substantive understandings.

New PP, but it is impossible to see any evidence of her having any thoughts on crime other than “how can we make it easier for criminals to avoid punishment.”

It's easy to generalize about Janeese Lewis George's positions on crime. If it holds criminals accountable in any way whatsoever, she is opposed. And if that legislation was proposed by Bowser and/or (gasp!) the police department, then she is adamantly opposed to it.

From her CM site:

"As a former Assistant Attorney General who saw the impact of community interventions, Councilmember Lewis George is calling for a significant increase in funding for violence prevention programs and services that reduce crime by improving the health, education, and economic opportunity for residents. She is working to strengthen coordination with federal and state agencies to address gun trafficking into the District and tighten restrictions on untraceable “ghost guns.” She is advocating for increased investments in victim services programs and has co-introduced legislation to expand supports for victims of crime. She supports providing services for our returning justice-involved residents to prevent recidivism and accelerate decarceration. And she has called for an increase in staffing in the Office of Human Rights to better address discrimination and the profound ways it impacts our residents’ security and wellbeing."

I think that her platform is comprehensive and is done a disservice by the people on this thread. It feels like other posters are just repeating talking points they've seen from people on Twitter, without any substance behind their comments. This is why I'm not that concerned about a race between her and Ms. Gore.

If you can show me where she is opposed to hold criminals accountable, I'm open to hearing it.

And by "'some people" you mean "people who aren't criminals"

I agree with her philosophy, and I am not a criminal. Try not to generalize please, as it makes it harder to move to substantive understandings.

It is unbelievable that anyone can be impressed by those platitudes that work overtime to obscure what they actually mean in practice.

I think her positions and actions on crime have been far more insightful than the standard Bowser stooge who's just looking at what polls well. Brandon Todd never did anything meaningful and we don't need a repeat of him.

No. DC does not do that apparently. Month ago a group or very young kids beat up a homeowner who had put out for them something they could play ball with in the alley. After 9 pm he told them his toddler needed to sleep and they had to wrap it up and they just attacked him and seriously injured him, they had been around since 6pm with no supervision, no dinner, no thing just young tweens on their own. The oldest was identified and after the arrest was released to his family. A young kid who violently beat up a man who had just set up something for them to play, only because after 3 hours snd in the dark asked them to wrap it up due to being night time, clearly grew up in a very f-up family if he even had one. Fact that he was roaming around in April mid week until past 9pm suggests family is the last place he should have been release to. And this seems to be what happens. Kids are released to their families and sometimes the families are not able to deal with them or are actually why the kids behave like this

Janeese Lewis George has spent her entire time in office fighting efforts to crack down on crime. She should just own it. She's not going to convince anyone now, now that she has a credible challenger, that she suddenly actually cares about crime.
