I appreciate you engaging. Here are a few from her site: "Bringing a new Cure the Streets team, which is DC’s most effective violence interruption program, to prevent gun violence in Petworth and Brightwood Park Securing six new CCTV security cameras in Ward 4 to address coverage gaps in at-risk areas and provide more evidence for MPD to investigate cases Working with ONSE to create a dedicated Pathways cohort for Ward 4 and 5 residents to provide intensive job training and transitional employment to at-risk individuals Partnering with DC OAG to hold nuisance properties accountable when they exacerbate public safety issues in our community Funding a new ONSE Leadership Academy at MacFarland Middle School to provide positive mentorship and development for at-risk students. This program has a successful record of improving behavior and academic results at schools like Paul PCS Securing funds for a new public library on Kennedy Street to bring much-needed resources and transform the corridor along with new housing and small businesses Leading multiagency walkthroughs and meetings focused on areas like Petworth Metro, 14th & Spring NW, and Kennedy Street to take steps to improve public safety Working in our community to address conditions that worsen public safety, including blighted properties, abandoned vehicles, inadequate lighting, substance abuse, a lack of security cameras, broken locks in our schools, and supporting our small businesses Introducing a bill to require schools to teach conflict resolution in their curricula so young people can learn to peacefully resolve conflicts as part of DC’s education system Advancing legislation that addresses the root causes of crime, including poverty, housing instability, family instability, and lead in our water that harms our children" As far as citywide crime rate issues, I firmly place those at the responsibility of the mayor. The rallying against RCCA and Charles Allen and all the Twitter buzzwords feel to me like a distraction from an administration in constant turnover, embroiled in multiple scandals, unable to pay their teachers, and unwilling to take responsibility. |
It's like Charles Allen trying to argue he's tough on crime. It's kind of an insult to people's intelligence. |
So basically just thoughts and prayers? It takes some gall to blame the mayor when JLG fights Bowser's attempts to crack down on crime at literally every turn. |
| If a challenger pushes JLG to give half a sht about the victims of crime in this city instead of cheering for the criminals, the competition will have been worth it. |
The number of posts spouting garbage taking points like this is just fascinating. You need some time off the internet. |
I haven't seen Bowser attempt to crack down on crime. If you're referring to the emergency crime bill, I understood why JLG voted against the measure (which passed by the way and has not led to a reduction in crime.) I'm frustrated that on the same site where a poster recently claimed they were more intelligent than ~98% of voters still argues in generic rhetoric like "crack down on crime". Bowser has been asleep at the wheel as her police force hangs out watching sports in their police cars, refuses to work, and blames Charles Allen for the rising crime rates and not their own shoddy police work. |
JLG is opposed to anything the mayor does, not because she really thinks it’s wrong, but because she opposes the mayor and that’s well known. So DC suffers because of people’s personal beefs. |
Is there an example of the mayor not being able to accomplish something, causing the city to suffer, due to JLG? |
Bingo! She is the one constant in the last decade. |
Talk to MPD and USAO. And the Mayor, who could fix the former, if she bothered to do anything approaching leadership. |
Nadeau and Allen have been on the Council exactly as long as Bowser has been mayor (since 2015). So no, she hasn't been the one constant. |
I do think it's fairly telling that people who are opposed to JLG are responding to these posts, but none that ask any substantive questions. It seems that much of the displeasure is based around online discourse, without facts to support their cases. |
With all due respect, you are criticizing posters for one-liners about cracking down on crime, but all you are doing is copying and pasting stuff from JLG's website to show what she's done. I voted for JLG. I was really impressed by her agenda and her clear understanding of the nuances of the criminal justice system. But things have gotten worse since she was elected. I am not saying it's her fault, but I don't know if she understands that things have gotten worse for residents of Ward 4. I believe strongly the criminal justice system is awful and doesn't rehab. anyone. I also strongly believe in public defense; for a time, I wanted to be a public defender. And yet: I've been in Brightwood Park for 10 years, and things are getting worse. Shootings all the time. I'm worried about my kids, who are now old enough to walk around alone. I attend a lot of ANC meetings. JLG usually sends a rep, and honestly, all we get is platitudes. The only thing that has helped Brightwood Park this year is the huge, multi-level effort, which included the FBI, DEA, ATF, and MPD, to arrest 12 individuals who were trafficking guns and drugs on Kennedy St. ALL THE TIME. It was a blissfully quiet summer. So yeah, I'm going to listen to the candidate who says she wants to focus on reducing crime. I don't know who I will vote for yet. |
I found it to be an easy one stop shop where I could find a Ward CM accomplishments. I'm not sure of other resources where they could be found. Are you suggesting that she didn't do those things? |
I'm saying, of course her website is going to make it *sound* like she has done a lot. She's promoting herself. But what does some of this mean? "Leading multiagency walkthroughs and meetings focused on areas like Petworth Metro, 14th & Spring NW, and Kennedy Street to take steps to improve public safety." OK great. What specific steps has she taken or gotten other agencies to take to improve public safety? A much better and objective indicator on what she has done to improve public safety would be a list of what bills she has introduced and how those bills would improve public safety, and how she has voted on any other crime bills. I haven't compiled that information for myself yet but plan to. From what I've read about her voting record on those types of issues in WaPo, I am concerned. |
