In a future oriented context - there are a few places you can easily wait just outside the airport, and be at the curb in 3 minutes, assuming no traffic backup. I have used the cell phone lot there, but it's often full.

One of the waiting areas is on the southbound GW parkway about a half mile from the main airport exit. It's a little scenic view parking lot, you will often see black cars parked there as they wait to pick up their reserved clients. It's labeled as "Roaches Run Waterfowl Sanctuary" but it should be labeled "DCA black car free waiting area" if they wanted to be accurate.

The second one is off of Route 1 southbound right at 23rd Street. There is a little strip mall there and a CVS. If you park and sit in your car there for 15-20 minutes no one will care.

This EXACT thing happened to me with my elderly mother in law. We got a ticket as my husband was escorting her out the baggage claim door and across the street to the car.

So you were in the car and you refused to move when they asked you?

Because my 85 year old MIL was literally in the street with my husband walking to the car. Not at baggage claim. Walking across the street.

You were supposed to drop your husband off, loop around, then come back and pick them up when they are across the street. It’s not a parking spot.

I fully agree but...if no one else was in that area, why not show some leniency?

Because you might have a bomb and the airport security has a job to do.

Now you both know. The pickup isn't a park and wait while someone runs in and finds the traveler. It's for people who are already on the curb, ready to go.

And free 1 hr parking in the garage.

I just had awful experiences at JFK and MSP airports because this isn’t enforced at all. I saw one guy sitting for 20 min in Uber pickup clearly just chilling waiting for a friend or something (because my own Uber took 20+ min to arrive)

Leniency is no longer allowed in the pickup area. After 9-11 it is assumed that cars that are stopped have bombs in them.
Prior to 9-11 you could have a bit of leniency. I believe these are actually federal laws that apply to airports.

Honestly in the context of airport pick up and drop off, 3 minutes might as well be 10-15 minutes. It's a pretty fast turn around.

As for whether you need to pay it, you did refuse to move, the supervisor sided with the parking officer, and you got a ticket for refusing to move your car. Why wouldn't you pay that ticket? You undeniably did what you were cited for.

And it's National, not Reagan.

I'm as liberal as anyone around, and this is just stupid. It's been Reagan for a couple of decades. Deal with it.
