What do you mean by this? Someone who once got a B? |
You can still go to UVA, VT, W&M with once got a B |
GMU is unlikely with that gpa. The bottom 25th percentile last year had a 3.45 (top 75th percentile was a 4.0? |
| Old Dominion University! A great school in a military town that is diverse and growing. Close to the beach and is D1. |
| UVA |
ODU is in my child’s top 3. We went to their open house a couple weeks back and they really do a nice job. We aren’t Asian, but I honestly think more people should give it a look. |
Responses like these are either ignorant or intentionally seeking to discourage others. Review the goddamned CDS! Through the completed junior year of one’s high school experience, assuming 7 classes per school year and a grade every semester (2x year): Unweighted GPA on 4.00 scale 41 As + 1 B = 3.98 40 As + 2 Bs = 3.95 39 As + 3 Bs = 3.93 38 As + 4 Bs = 3.90 37 As + 5 Bs = 3.88 36 As + 6 Bs = 3.86 35 As + 7 Bs = 3.83 34 As + 8 Bs = 3.81 You can get more than 1 B and still go to those schools. Maybe not this particular applicant b/c of other limitations, but roll up to UVA, VT or W&M as a full pay OOS applicant with a 3.81 unweighted GPA, 4.29 weighted GPA from a top high school across the country, 14 AP classes, 5s on at least 10 AP exams, 1600 SAT score, great ECs, and strong essays and I’ll place tall stacks of high society that it will be your choice which of the three you want to attend next year. With 8 Bs. |
The 75th percentile of students at UVA last year had almost a 4.6 |
That GPA ios not getting you into GMU |
| Doesn’t GMU have a 91% acceptance rate? |
Np. You have an issue. Let pp talk about her child. It's your problem that it is making you feel small. Stop it. |
I’m unaware of that source, but regardless - that’s a weighted GPA reference point. What was the 25th %ile? Given the various weighting “techniques”, multiple B grades are not disqualifying unless the rest of the application isn’t strong. |
No, more in the 80s but anyone with any sense knows that the Virginia students self-select, with the advice of their high school counselors (who have Naviance and SCHEV at their hand) when applying. Same for all the other Virginia schools, which is why UVA's selectivity at about 20% is considered high yet very difficult to get into |
Uh, maybe the STATE! SCHEV publishes it every year. GMU 75th percentile last year had a 4.0; median 3.74 and bottom 25th percentile a 3.45. https://research.schev.edu/. There's even a wiki on SCHEV |
Here’s a very feasible example … Through the end of the summer following the applicant’s 11th grade, 22 classes for 42 semester grades. 10 AP classes (+ 1.00 GPA weight) 6 honors classes (+ 0.50 GPA weight) 6 college prep. classes Eight (8) B grades yields a 4.41 weighted GPA. Odds are you’re easily waltzing into UVA with a 1600 / 36 and an otherwise strong application from a top HS. |
