In VA, mostly JMU, GMU, VCU

What do you mean by this? Someone who once got a B?

You can still go to UVA, VT, W&M with once got a B

The 75th percentile of students at UVA last year had almost a 4.6

I’m unaware of that source, but regardless - that’s a weighted GPA reference point. What was the 25th %ile? Given the various weighting “techniques”, multiple B grades are not disqualifying unless the rest of the application isn’t strong.

Here’s a very feasible example …

Through the end of the summer following the applicant’s 11th grade, 22 classes for 42 semester grades.

10 AP classes (+ 1.00 GPA weight)
6 honors classes (+ 0.50 GPA weight)
6 college prep. classes

Eight (8) B grades yields a 4.41 weighted GPA. Odds are you’re easily waltzing into UVA with a 1600 / 36 and an otherwise strong application from a top HS.

Correction: 44 semester grades

There’s too often a paper chase vibe to the feedback on this forum, trying to discourage applicants. There are a lot of ways to stand out to colleges.

Uh, maybe the STATE! SCHEV publishes it every year. GMU 75th percentile last year had a 4.0; median 3.74 and bottom 25th percentile a 3.45. https://research.schev.edu/. There's even a wiki on SCHEV

Sorry, I’m not from whatever state it is that publishes that data.

The data indicates “HS GPA” - is that after junior year, or final GPA at graduation?

Almost zero Asians at Norfolk State or Virginia State, so I would avoid those. Lots of Filipino-Americans at ODU, but most will be commuter students.

Look, in these days you should recognize some things:

a. Massive grade inflation means that you are screwing something up if you get a GPA lower than 3.0.

b. Whatever the cause of the screw-ups -- low IQ, learning disability, laziness, ADHD, anxiety, overconfidence, poor health, whatever -- is not going to magically resolve itself by sending a kid to an expensive college.

c. College degrees on the low end are typically worth the paper they're printed on, and spending a hundred thousand dollars or more to get that piece of paper is a bad idea.

If you want to try college, try something easy, that works with the kind of students that don't do that well, costs relatively little money, located very close by where you can offer support.

Did you gift wrap the copy of The Fountainhead that you gave to Larlo on his birthday, or just leave it next to his breakfast toast with a post it telling him there'd be a quiz on the material at dinner?

ODU is in my child’s top 3. We went to their open house a couple weeks back and they really do a nice job.

We aren’t Asian, but I honestly think more people should give it a look.

I’m not Asian but ODU has grown so much in the past 20 years and has excellent leadership and teachers. It is an underrated school in Virginia and has excellent sports and academic programs along with study abroad options.

My husband got his engineering degree at Mason. Plenty of students of all backgrounds in that program.

Sadly, many of them couldn’t write a coherent sentence, which I found out through editing the group project write ups for my husband.

His “favorite” classmates were the ones who wouldn’t shut up about being TJ grads. My husband barely passed HS, joined the military, then went back to school. Guess who had the better grades?

Well, he had you editing his group projects

Which was smart of him as he knows writing is not one of his strengths. His classmates were worse, though.

There weren’t that many writing assignments, honestly. I helped maybe 3 times over the course of 4 years.

He just wanted me to help with clarity so that non-engineers like me could understand the written parts of their projects.

I certainly didn’t help him with his advanced math classes or whatever science classes he had to take! He got As in those all on his own.

It is 4.51 GPA for UVA at the 75th percentile, which is high but doesn't round to 4.6.

For other schools cited it is 4.53 for W&M, 4.33 for VT, 4.11 for JMU, 4.06 for VCU, and 4.0 for GMU.

You will not get into any of these schools, outside Norfolk state with a 3.0

A POC with a 3.0 can absolutely get into JMU.

First out from under the rock? You missed a few things.

1: The Supreme Court won't allow universities to use race or ethnicity anymore
2: The Common App has made receiving that data optional
3: No university is ever going to touch that data again. There is line of lawyers wrapped around the building just dying for a crack

So JMU won't know if Brian Smith is POC or not.

Welcome to 2023. Hope you enjoyed your nap!

Don't worry, I'll make sure my kids mentions it on their College Essay.

Just read a whole bunch of scholarship applications for a national scholarship where people were like "And speaking of viruses and my interest in being a virology researcher, I'm transgender." It was weird. Also irrelevant. No points granted.

Are these underachieving students? or this is what their families can afford with the student still at home and possibly working in family business?
