I am always in meetings but typically answer in case it’s the kids camp or school. These are all cases where they have email info or could text. Does anyone else find it super non ideal when people just… call? Unless it’s emergent?

Are you....22 years old? You write like you are straight out of college and trying to use big business-y words.

No, we all have caller ID. If you don't know who it is or don't want to talk, just don't answer. It's not hard. Grow a spine, little baby.

Are you…80 years old? Stop demanding phone calls like it’s 1996 and join the modern world, Grandma. It’s not hard.

Neither are you, weird Boomer-sequel phone callers!!!!!!!!! Send a freaking text or email like a normal person in 2023.

*Boomer-esque. Thanks, Autocorrect.

And this is how text/email messages *start* to get messy confusing people.

It was corrected within 30 seconds. If that “confuses” anyone, they have some kind of intellectual issue.

I wonder why there's almost a post a day on here by lonely people with no friends. 🤪

+1

This is a site for socially inept people.

+2 also don’t stop by their house. They will not come to the door. Also don’t talk to your neighbors or strangers anywhere.

As far as opening the door, half the time it’s a solicitor asking for something so that’s why I don’t answer. Yes, I should probably get a camera.

I've lived overseas for a long time. Text I think is even more common outside the United States, especially WhatsApp or similar.

I actually freak out when I get a call from an unknown number, which doesn't happen often, because I assume it's an emergency related to my kids. Usually it's not, it's some random caller I don't know who wants to dominate my time.

Also, for social catch up, voice messages on WhatsApp are awesome. Especially with time zone differences. You can really, really connect like in the olden days (e.g., high school -- I am 49) days if you send series of messages back and forth. I wish more people would do this.

I am with you on this one! Telegram is even better. With premium you can transcribe the voice messages of you prefer

I far prefer WhatsApp (we received warnings in our area to take Telegram off our phones in our area when the war in Ukraine started, but I am relatively close) but that is really good to know

Based on convenience alone telegram is truly superior
Not sure what it has to do with the war in ukraine so can’t attest to that aspect

Anonymous wrote:At least with emails you can have a signature line saying what your preferred method of contact is. You could have a phone message saying you hate the phone and to text you or that you will text or email them back. If you hate texting then you can just not respond and they might email or call. Everyone is different. This is probably why people can't make friends because their preferred method of communication does not align. One of my kids' teachers even said he hated the telephone and not to contact him that way.

My primary number is a landline. It annoys me that text does not have an effective way to let people know you don’t want to be contacted via text. No one respects the Do Not Disturb function.

Oh god no I am not contacting you via landline thanks
Unless I really need smth lol

Do you return missed calls?

Usually no. It depends what it is. If it’s any type of doctor appointment calling to confirm an appointment, no. They won’t actually cancel. If they are calling to cancel and tell me I need to reschedule then yes, I’ll call back.

If you are my elderly mother, that return call will happen on my way to work the next day. If it’s an emergency and a message is left I’ll call back sooner.

If it’s a friend or acquaintance, I’m not calling back to talk. We can catch up by text.

So you never talk to your friends?

Not with voice calls. I text people all of the time. Busy working parents don’t have time to talk on the phone. It’s only gotten worse now that my kids are teens and I’m always out somewhere. Many friends are in the same situation. Even if we get together, we coordinate by text. Friends that live far away, we catch up by text. There can be hours or days between messages. Everyone understands.

This! To me it’s unacceptable to just randomly call someone unless emergency

What big businessy words are in this?
I can’t see any words that fit this description so can only assume you yourself have never done business and don’t know the difference

I am a busy working parent and I talk on the phone with my friends.

Newsflash everyone: friendship is a gift. Family is a gift. Having people in your life that care enough to call you is a blessing. No matter everyone on this board is so miserable, literally treating their friend’s efforts to connect as miserable obligations.

OMG. The number of texts or or mails saying something akin to “what I meant to say or include was …” is ridiculous.

Saying I’m too busy to talk on the phone (or even text) is often just a mask for anxiety. It pre-dates COVID which only exacerbates it. Can’t wait to see what happens with AI. I’m the near future we will see threads complaining about having to communicate with real people and how the preference will be to talk to AI, have AI “friends”/“coworkers”, etc. People cannot deal with the complexities of other human and AI will be less to deal with.
