Hot take: it’s no longer appropriate to just call someone

This thread is disheartening. We are too busy, to full of ourselves, or to antisocial ti talk to people.

Disagree. I enjoy talking to people, to some extent, but have figured out that the only people who call are the monologuers. They call because they want to talk at me, not have a conversation. I don't answer and send them a text later.

The "conversation people" are happy to get together and talk there, so we do that.

I’m Gen X (nearly 50) and I enjoy getting old school phone calls out of the blue.

I am considerably older than you, but hate them.

If it is on the weekend, I was undoubtedly just about to do something/have plans. At night, I am vegging out/too tired.

If it is during the week/day, I probably have a deadline/again, some plan for my time.

Just ask for a certain amount of time and I will schedule it, like I might a lunch with a friend. For a time I am relaxed and can make it my priority.

Then just don’t answer. No one is demanding you answer the phone every time it rings. You know there is a thing called voicemail.

You can cling to outdated ideas all you like, but most people aren’t going to check a “voicemail.” It’s not 1996. Just send a damn text or email.

Yes-- calls are not preferred. They make life more hectic.

But why?

Does everyone here realize that you are not obligated to answer the phone at that moment?

Is this just for personal calls or are you also not okay with your boss/colleagues calling?

I see teens and twenty-somethings talking on the phone constantly. Everywhere they go, they're chatting and have their ear buds in.
Seems like it's not really about what's current or normal. Some people, like you, just don't like talking on the phone.

I turn off my text messages. If it’s important, you’ll call me. And if I haven’t had an online convo with you in the past year, I delete you from my contacts. Texts are for appt reminders and meet ups. I’ll get to your text when I get to it. It could sit there for a week.

And appointments? I have had an eye doctor, a dentist and a salon all call me in the last week to let me know that the appointments I booked online, with text confirmations, were actually NOT available.

+1. My lawyer tries to text and it inevitably leads to a longer text “conversation” than necessary. A quick phone call clears everything up quickly. He’s on a flat fee, so it’s not as if he’s juicing the billing. Texting is just totally inefficient.

Agree. It takes me longer to formulate a text or email.

I see teens call each other and FaceTime frequently. Sometimes it’s nice to hear a friend’s voice or see their face.

Translation: I’ve found a way to rationalize my self importance.

Thank you. A simple question or exchange could take all day if handled via email.

One thing that drives me up the wall is when people text me to call them.
