Baltimore has turned apocalyptic. MoCo’s future?

All that momentum is gone now...I wouldn't drive anywhere near where I worked. The business, political and community leadership will never be on the same page. Feel bad for all those who are stuck there w little hope.

They are still building out harbor east and fells / canton / brewers hill all seem to be trending up. You wouldn’t drive through harbor east or fells? Really? Is the Whole Foods too scary?

I'm ok with blaming the Baltimore PD for their inadequate actions before and inadequate response after the shooting. This is basic serve-and-protect stuff. It also demonstrates, yet again, how poor/non-white communities are simultaneously underpoliced and overpoliced.

Once again, I'll ask...where are all the DCUM threads with knowledgeable posters like you asking how their children can become police officers?

How is this relevant? Plus why would anybody post on DCUM to ask that question anyway?

So if there’s a huge crowd of disorderly, armed people congregating in your neighborhood and you call the cops a bunch, and then there’s a mass shooting when the cops never show up…you’re fine with that?

Evidently, the police are biased when they do show up, and also when they don't show up.

Most people understand that different police responses are appropriate depending on different circumstances. If you don't show up when there's a problem, that's a problem. If you do show up to create problems when there isn't a problem, that's also a problem.

And those determinations should be made in an eye blink? The same few seconds that someone could draw out a knife or gun or machete?

No, they had a lead time of several days.

Soooo...the police should come and handle the "disorderly armed people?" What if someone gets shot or arrested? Are we in agreement that it's not enough to just have a talk with the armed folks congregating in your neighborhood?

Yes.

Posters ask about careers and educational opportunities all the time, and you know it. Many of them also denigrate police officers and share their wisdom about dealing with criminals and violent, unstable people -- but they don't want to do it themselves or have their family members do that job.

Are we only allowed to criticize the police if we, ourselves, sign up to be police officers?

Well, what has happened all too often is that the police show up when there is a problem, and then when an armed criminal becomes aggressive, the police are accused of creating the problem by shooting that armed criminal.

So I guess I can understand why they just choose not to show up -- better to have some pointless report get issued than going into harms way and then being put on trial for trying to handle a difficult situation in which armed criminals might have killed you.

Not that poster, but people need to recognize that the political climate post-George Floyd has left a huge shortage of police. Without enough police, officers are only responding to calls for service, and often responding very late. Further, they have no time to actually engage in community policing because true community policing requires having some down time to talk with community members, understand their needs, and then create plans to address them. Staff shortages erode public safety and community trust. This is a no-win situation for BOTH the police and the community.

George Floyd was not armed. Get your facts straight.
