FCPS was found to be violating the law by not having in person school for special needs students. Shame on fcps they need to be held accountable. |

Who is taking advantage? All of the posts in this thread are discussing valid reimbursements (speech therapy, tutoring). IF I get arrested for shoplifting, its not a defense to the crime that someone else shoplifted and didn't get caught or arrested. |

That's true for all IEP meetings everywhere in FCPS. There is no consistency in what is offered or provided. |

My child's FCPS speech therapist moved to another state and took another full time private job while simultaneously staying employed by FCPS. She showed up for one "virtual" speech meeting all year.
Our school's case manager offered every student from our school who was assigned to that speech therapist four additional 30 minute speech sessions as compensatory services. We turned it down b/c our child is now in MS and we didn't want him to lose instructional time. Regardless, I don't see how any family that agreed to such a small compensatory offer is "taking advantage" of FCPS. If a family had sought out private speech therapy to make up for this FCPS therapist who should have been fired, they should be reimbursed. |
| FCPS employees double-dipping with private employment during Covid is a huge issue that FCPS has managed to sweep under the rug. I have heard of two different STs who did this (in addition I guess to 8:42s). One of my dc's high school PE teachers canceled class multiple times b/c he was going out of town to referee in person lacrosse games in areas that weren't shut down. |

Why aren’t all the other school systems across the country “reimbursing” and “compensating” that did the same thing as FCPS? Did those parents sue their school districts? Hmm just FCPS?
What about all the health care patients who could not go to the doctor, get an X-ray or mri, or even have surgery? Is healthcare getting sued? Are you asking doctors office to give you free appointments that you missed while they were shut down to a global, unprecedented pandemic? Are your insurance for reimbursement or filing a class action lawsuit against blue cross blue shield or Inova? hmmm but FCPS is different because that’s “your right” and even a global pandemic can’t affect services? What about all the families who couldn’t have a proper funeral? Are they suing the funeral homes, asking to have a free funeral, or asking for reimbursement? No. Because that’s not reasonable. Because of course a global pandemic has an impact on all aspects of life!!!! The fact that you can’t appreciate how a GLOBAL PANDEMIC would impact education (even special education!!) is truly baffling to me. Of course FCPS could have and should have done better. Absolutely. For sure. of course Covid was a terrible trajectory for our children. For special needs children and neurotypical children. Should FCPS be expected to reimburse and compensate? No. Are you taking money from other children, staff, and the system that we all pay taxes to support? Yes you are! My mind is blown that any family would expect this or take the money/services from the school or even THINK that staff could meet those demands (public or private sector). YOU all are out of touch with zero perspective. Can’t wait for you all to just finally get reimbursed and get off your high horses. Looking forward to hearing about your next violations of rights which you’ll probably report to Fox News. This thread makes me hope you all move away and I know that I am not alone in my sentiments. |

Special ed costs are going to blow up FCPS. The rest of the students suffered too and get no compensation. Special ed students in other areas get no compensation. It’s not fair to the other students or the system that we are in the hook for paying all this money to a subset of students. |

If that PE teach took PTO, then what is the problem? |

No. OCR is setting a legal precedent at the expense of FCPS. The angry, unreasonable, and even greedy parents are milking it to meet their own needs while turning a blind eye to the damage it does to the school system. And justifying it because they have children with a disability and claiming they didn’t receive FAPE During an unprecedented time in our world’s history. |

Notice area counties are not “reimbursing” or “compensating.” Why aren't London County Schools, Arlington County Schools, Alexandria City Schools, Falls Church Schools being audited by OCR? They did the same thing as FCPS during the pandemic ! Its because 1) some of the FCPS parents are special and overly litigious about their rights and 2) OCR only needs to make an example of 1-4 to set a precedent for how education handles the next pandemic or disaster.
Any parent taking FCPS reimbursement or compensatory services has no respect from me. I see you is freeloading inconsiderate humans who only care about yourself. You are hurting the FCPS schools and families. It’s try terrible that you go online and complain that your reimbursement's (which you do not deserve) are not happening fast enough. |
| Families are not taking advantage. They were told to give their expenses and were told to have these meetings. They did. Of course they are going to list all the expenses they think they can. Wouldn't anyone? Is there even a monetary issue? The school system lost a ton of students and high paying teachers and were flush with money during the pandemic. How do we even know there is a monetary problem? There are reports you can find online which say that special needs kids typically cost 4 times more on average that typically parents shell out with some additional subsidies. These kids just cost more to raise. Its a fact that is not goinf away. They are our citizens. Parents typically foot the bill well beyond what a typical child costs. |

“Wouldn’t you?” No I would not. I would say “that is ridiculous. It was a global pandemic that was a terrible tragedy for all of mankind and I’m not going to take tax payer dollars because of how the school handled it.” They “asked your expenses because of FCPS failure” because the IEP team (innocent casualties) was ordered to have an extra mandatory meeting with you that I am sure they did not want to have. On the other hand, you were not ordered to go along with OCR settlement which sets a legal precedent at the expense of students and staff in the county. |

Your statements are likely inaccurate and assumptions about the speech therapist. I’m sorry your child didn’t have a therapist, but based on details in your post which are likely not accurate, it is not likely because of the pandemic. Staffing shortages exist even in non- pandemic times. |

A teacher at our elementary school submitted and was granted an ADA request to teach from home. And then proceeded to go to Disney and posted photos to the public on Instagram. |

Falls Church City and PWC were open five days a week in person for children with disabilities in the fall of 2020. |
