Anyone been reimbursed yet from FCPS?

How fast of a turnaround are people expecting? Genuinely curious.

because my child has an IEP and FCPS did not give her any of the required services from her IEP for almost a year. We paid out of pocket which is fine but FCPS offered to reimburse us so I did not turn them down. I intend to donate the money to a organization who helps parents struggling with special needs kids. But I also believe- FCPS will never send me a check. They are so shady and so awful to the special education families.

From my vantage point, FCPS devotes so much time and resources to special education and all people do is complain or sue. They work so hard and spend so much time and money on special ed - what about all the other students in FCPS?

The worksheet I got from FCPS said we would be reimbursed within 45 days from approval. I don’t think they have met that deadline for anyone. FCPS committed to the date and it is stated on the paperwork they provided.

It is always easy to tell who has never dealt with FCPS special Ed. They do work really hard at trying to not do what they are supposed to do. They work really hard at making sure they make life as difficult as possible for families.

last week they reached out and they are asking about a w4, anyone else have to do this?

I got my check a week or two ago. Filled out the W4 during the last week of school, so basically took all summer break to cut the check.

I haven’t heard anything yet at all.

I am being asked this as well. Don’t feel right filling out an irs form for therapy reimbursement. Has anyone gotten their reimbursement without filling out an irs form? I’m not sure if this is legal. Anyone have insight?

How do you get from "people have to sue" to "what about the other students?"
If people have to sue to get their child services, it's because the child is not being served in school. Is it bad enough for you to sue for your kid? No? Ok then.

I filled it out. Dont care if its legal. Id rather get taxed on an extra $2400 i didnt expect to receive than not get the $2400 at all.

… all income is taxed, even settlements from lawsuits (a few types withstanding).

In addition to being a legal necessity, the W-4 also adds an added layer of protection from fraud. Lots of folks started producing some pretty interesting receipts and financial restitution requests once they heard compensation was in play. Asking people to fill in IRS documentation does tend to make the grifters think twice/get cold feet.

Oh please, are you implying parents of disabled children are making fake receipts for fake therapy? That's ridiculous.

You have to fill out the W4 to be paid by FCPS for anything. Our dc was placed by FCPS at a residential school and then kicked out. They covered the airfare to the school and back. We had to fill out a w4 to be reimbursed, but we didn't pay taxes on it as "income". It wasn't income; it was a cost we incurred that they were legally liable to pay.

Yes.

There are bad/greedy people out there, there are people who have children with IEPs. Being one doesn’t automatically exclude you from possibly being the other. FFX county is one of the largest counties in the country, it serves a massive SpEd population, it seems to reason that you might have some bad faith actors in a potential pot of literal thousands (And to be clear, to qualify a student simply needed to have been receiving services at some point between March 2020 and June 2022).

I would think that fellow parents of children with disabilities wouldn’t mind having literally the bare minimum (like legally required) gate checks to prevent financial exploitation of a system they stand to benefit from. FCPS doesn’t have a money printing machine, if grifters had unfettered access it’d hurt deserving families in some way.

Might be shocking but in my experience if you talk to teachers you’d find at least one story per school if someone attempting to get financially compensated for something wild. Doesn’t necessarily mean it’s fictional, but there’s been a lot of stretching of truth or seeking compensation for things that were existing before the pandemic.

Just so we’re clear, while you’re thinking of maybe basic OT therapy, some families are asking for full tuition reimbursements fir tens of thousands or compensation for Au Pairs or extremely expensive supports like equine therapy for kids that don’t have any documentation to support ever needing that. Some families have tried double dipping by asking for compensation for different kids but the same services.

So yes, I’m sorry to shatter your illusion of your community, lots of people saw this as a money grab opportunity.
