Immigrants who don’t learn to speak, write and read English have very limited chance of upward mobility in the U.S. They mostly end up limited to low paying, hard labor jobs such as lawn, nannying, cleaning, etc. And their children are impacted as well.

No one is saying an immigrant have to only speak English and forego their native language and customs- they can still speak their own language at home, teach it to their children, and such.

But English should be required.

+1. I’m a child of immigrants (and lifelong Democratic voter), and I see no problem with this bill. Many countries, including Western democracies, require a language test as part of the naturalization process. Immigrants shouldn’t have to sacrifice their own language and culture, but requiring English proficiency is good for everyone.

Which other Western countries are famous melting pots? I wish that immigrants who came here could have English proficiency, more for their own success here than for “efficiency,” but the fact is that lots of those other Western democracies that require language tests also provide language classes. Norway does, for example.

Canada, Australia, the UK. Australia has 1/3rd of its population foreign born.

Lots of countries are melting pots - even take Ukraine as an example, it is the product of Varangians (scandinavian), Slavs, Tatars, Jews, Greeks, Armenians, Romanians, Hungarians and many others.

Yes, and Ukranian is their official language.
DP

They also had official regional languages (non-Ukrainian) based on the makeup of each oblast but that went away with Russia's invasion of Crimea and Donbas in 2014. But this is also not relevant or making the case for why the US would need English as a national language.

Keep moving those goalposts! First you asked "which other Western countries are famous melting pots?". You were provided answers, by several different people. You didn't like those answers, so now you deem them "not relevant." Keep it up - it's clear we're dealing with a non-serious person.

You're confusing different posters. And nothing I've seen anywhere in this thread makes any kind of relevant point as to why the US should have one official language of English.

That's ok. No one needs to convince you.

If you went to any major city in the US around 1920, you would have found newspapers published in Polish, German, Italian, et cetera. New Orleans had newspapers published in French for the cajun populace up until recently. Much of the southwest has families that have been American for generations, but who speak Spanish at home. Or, native American. In the Civil War, there were entire regiments of American soldiers who spoke German.

This is performative "Hay speak 'Murkan you dang for'ners" crap to pander to the trailer-dwelling methhead ignoramuses of America.

Are you aware that the UK and Canada have citizens who originally hailed from all of those countries - and MORE? China, Pakistan, India, Jamaica, etc. Yet their official language is indeed, English. That doesn't minimize the contributions of those who came from elsewhere and settled in the UK/Canada. English is their official language (as well as French in Canada) and should be ours, as well.

We aren't Canada, we aren't the UK. Ridiculous to push legislation on a non-issue like language.

I completely disagree. It may be a "non-issue" to you, but it isn't to me. Good for him and I hope the bill passes.

I completely disagree with you. The legislature's time would be better spent on *ACTUAL* issues like gun violence, methamphetamine abuse, homelessness, spiraling healthcare costs, mental health, or any number of other things which are VASTLY more important and VASTLY more urgent than a national language. And you are a complete fool for thinking national language deserves such priority and urgency.

Wow, you are really threatened by this, aren't you! In what way has this been promoted with such "priority and urgency"? It's just another bill, along with all of the ones that address the other issues you mention. But this one has certainly got you clutching those pearls... very telling.

The only thing it's telling is that this is a pointless bill and a complete waste of taxpayer and Congressional resources to pursue. And honestly I don't want to be the fool to tell the Navajo, Ojibwe and others that their languages are not American.

This is interesting - I didn't realize that the majority of US states have *already* made English their official language. Even California! Too funny.

"The release also notes that a majority of states and all territories have already made English their official language."

And as with Vance's bill, what's the point of having a state official language? It doesn't really accomplish anything, it's just anglo supremacy virtue signaling.

The UK does not have an official de jure language.

Oh sorry, you probably don’t speak Latin.

Funny! Here's a Latin term you may want to look up: de facto. English is the de facto language of the UK.

Doesn’t matter. The UK does not have a “legislated” national language. The de facto language of the United States is also English. I really don’t see the need for a law at the national level. It seems to be a massive waste of time and money.

Honestly, this effort sounds like some dumb intern make-work project at ALEC or Cato. Don’t you kids have anything better to do?

If this bill is so unimportant and so "dumb," then why are you worried? Shouldn't make any difference, right?

Get off of your ridiculous "worried/threatened" strawman. It misses the mark completely.

The point that you keep repeatedly ignoring is that there are far more important things for our legislators to be focusing on than this tripe.

So tell us about the official languages of various African countries. Are they virtue signaling "anglo supremacy"? How about China? Guatemala? Somalia? Mexico? Egypt? What does their use of an "official language" tell us about them? This should be good, I'll get my popcorn.

Isn’t English proficiency and passing a citizenship test already required to get your citizenship? And many immigrants who are undocumented are never becoming citizens so I’m not sure how this law would change anything. Again, how would this law change anything on a day to day basis?

It would be about what language the government uses to operate. It wouldn't have to have signs in multiple languages, or translations. Perhaps employment might not require multiple languages in as many positions.
Voting ballots would not have interpreters or translations.

Yes you can. First you get a green card. Then you get citizenship.
