JD Vance introduces bill to make English the official language of the US

Anonymous
Excellent bill. People who think this bill is racist towards latinos have a good heart and good intentions, but as the saying goes “the way to hell is paved with good intentions.”

Immigrants who don’t learn to speak, write and read English have very limited chance of upward mobility in the U.S. They mostly end up limited to low paying, hard labor jobs such as lawn, nannying, cleaning, etc. And their children are impacted as well.

No one is saying an immigrant have to only speak English and forego their native language and customs- they can still speak their own language at home, teach it to their children, and such.

But English should be required.

What is the point of these frivolous bills?

The more time and effort that they spend on these bills, the less time and effort they have for bills that could create meaningful harm, so I'm good with it.

+1. I’m a child of immigrants (and lifelong Democratic voter), and I see no problem with this bill. Many countries, including Western democracies, require a language test as part of the naturalization process. Immigrants shouldn’t have to sacrifice their own language and culture, but requiring English proficiency is good for everyone.

Which other Western countries are famous melting pots? I wish that immigrants who came here could have English proficiency, more for their own success here than for “efficiency,” but the fact is that lots of those other Western democracies that require language tests also provide language classes. Norway does, for example.

Canada - de jure languages are English and French
UK - has no de jure language. Welsh is a de jure language in Wales. Gaelic is spoken by a meaningful minority in Northern Island. Scots is spoken by 2m in Scotland.

Isn’t English proficiency and passing a citizenship test already required to get your citizenship? And many immigrants who are undocumented are never becoming citizens so I’m not sure how this law would change anything. Again, how would this law change anything on a day to day basis?

Because this is really a pressing issue in America - NOT.

Even Reba McEntire is gently chiding the GOP to move on from their idiotic and not remotely pressing “issues.” Get a clue, bigots.

Simple - to force the other side to come out against it by saying absurd things

Like - it’s racist to have a language!

Or - borders are racist!

Or whatever

I agree it’s a dumb use of political capital

Bigots?
You think making English as our official language is bigoted?

Hell, even Harvard Business school recognizes the importance of English.....calling it the "global language of business."

Why don't you want immigrants to be successful? Do you have such a low opinion of people coming here thinking they are incapable of learning the English language?

It would change that everything needs to be in English, not 4 different languages to accommodate those that live in shadows in contempt of our laws.
Yes I am ok with making these people’s lives more difficult and no I am not Christian.

Actually, I think English as a national language fits in perfectly with the melting pot. You (an immigrant) come here and leave your mark on American culture, and it leaves its mark on you. Some degree of assimilation is required if you're going to "melt" in, and speaking English is a pretty basic place to start. And like you said, it contributes to their own success as well as general efficiency. I'm fine with a policy of subsidizing or providing free English classes in conjunction with a bill like this.

+1 I would love to get a federal job teaching English. Please hire me so I can help in Vance's efforts to contribute to our country.
